Hi,
I'm planning to install some cameras and want to know what type of camera I should get for my use and where they should be placed?? I want to capture traffic coming up the driveway. Please see attached pics.

There isn't an overhang on the garage but I could add something if necessary. I'm located in the northeast.

Thanks for your advice.

My main question was what type near the garage to get the best view of the driveway. Dome, Bullet etc.

Is it possible to get 1 camera to target the driveway from the garage?

Hi @Bws

Most member prefer turret style cameras.

Note: Lots of information provided already in the notes, and numerous threads here.

HI Mat200
I've been reading threads for a few days. I'll read the cliff notes now but will welcome suggestions on placement with the posted pics. Thanks

From my notes, there should be something similar in the cliff notes:

Recommended Locations for outside cameras:
( For modest sized houses cameras can cover multiple areas - example one of the front of the house cameras can cover parking area, expect to use 6-8 cameras for a modest size home. )
2x for front of house
1-2x covering car parking area if outside ( i recommend at least 2 now )
1-2x covering front entrance
2x covering side of house ( one on each side )
2x covering back of house
1-2x covering each entrance
1-2x covering sidewalk / street in an attempt to ID vehicles ( you may need a better "zoom" for this camera )
0-1,2x dedicated to read license plates ( LPR ). Note you will need to adjust/tune this camera to be able to read license plates.

Yes. It will be outdoors. I just wasn't sure where to place it.

Hi @Bws

Pick up one of these cameras or the IPC-HDW5231xx
Review-Dahua IPC-HDW2231RP-ZS Starlight Camera-Varifocal

and a PoE switch or other PoE power source, and start testing possible locations.

setup a test rig
My test rig: rev.2

and start testing possible locations which you may want to place a camera.

If you want to capture images of people which you may want to ID close to the camera, the camera needs to be mounted about 6-8 feet high for the best chances of a good ID image.

Is that test rig patented? Where can I buy that?

Is there a 4k camera that might be more expensive but have better image quality?

This would be the one you want:

IPC-HF8835F
8MP Starlight+ Box Network Camera
> 4/3” 8Megapixel progressive scan CMOS
> H.265&H.264 triple-stream encoding
> 25/30fps@4K(3840×2160)
> WDR(140dB), Day/Night(ICR), 3DNR, AWB, AGC, BLC
> Multiple network monitoring: Web viewer, CMS(DSS/PSS) & DMSS
> Micro SD memory, PoE

Probably a little too much $ for me. I was thinking there might a slight upgrade closer to $200.

Depends on what you need to optimize for, low light or day light

btw - this is covered in the cliff notes

I've read the cliff notes a few times. I need to optimize for night time.
You'll want to look at the various Dahua OEM starlight models ( or if you like Hikvision the darkfigther models ).

look for Dahua OEM models IPC-HxWx2xx <- 2MP models, the 8MP listed above is good - however, it does not meet your budget goal
