Has anyone done all of their BI recording, alerts, etc. to an external NAS drive? Any issues vs an internal drive? I'm thinking about getting a NAS and hiding it someplace secure and having everything record to it, obviously hiding the whole machine would probably be best but I do like to work with it on a local monitor, just spitballing ideas. Right now I have BI send me push alerts and it emails snapshots when it's triggered to email, but it's kind of annoying with the emails and it would be nice to just have push notification to my phone and everything else go to a secure drive. I've got a pretty good hiding place.
 
thats just an extra point of failure, if you get cameras with SD storage simply load them up with local storage and have them record in parallel.. the SD wont archive any considerable time but it'll get the last few days.. its not like you'll notice your NVR went missing for very long.

internal disks are alot more reliable, hide the whole NVR if you can hide a NAS

Yeah, it was just a thought. This house has no attic but there is a drop ceiling over the pantry, very odd, but a great place to hide stuff.
 
if you require redundancy you just simply run a 2nd NVR, another advantage of external PoE..

You can simultaneously record locally to the PC and to your hidden nas...simply clone the cameras and hide the duplicate from the screen and mobile app.

i have 5 cameras all running via qnap ts 451 8g ram model... runs like a champ... connected via cisco 2960 poe advanced services... the qnap is running lacp balanced... 4tb ibm drives
 
I've got 15 cameras running to a Synology DS214play NAS, which is backed up with a Synology DS215j. Works flawlessly, got no hicuphs at all. The NAS is easier to hide than a desktop. My network is Gb, with cat 6e wiring, so, not having any throughput issues. The only time I do have issues is if the DS214play is running some other apps that take up cpu resources (video transcoding, syncing between the NAS's, hyper backup, etc.).

Will cloning cameras use more PC resources like a physically different camera or will it be minimal cause its the same camera? Kind of thinking about the whole "They stole ALL my shit" scenario.

it will be minimal...make sure to hide the duplicate form display..

So, currently, I have my cameras recording to a secondary local hdd.

Example: D:\Blueiris\New

I was going to Clone and hide some cameras (as you suggested), and hopefully have them record to a networked NAS.

Example: Z:\Blueiris\New

I'm not seeing where you can specify different paths for different cameras.

Can you offer some assistance?

Cameras record tab.. First set aux folders in clips and archiving

So in: Blue Iris Option / Clips and Archiving / Folders

I defined: Aux 1 as Z:\Blueiris\New (250Gb then move to Aux 2) and then defined Aux 2 as Z:\Blueiris\Stored

For a particular cameras in its: Camera Properties / Record - I checked Video and set it to continuous, and set the Folder to Aux 1.

No video files get written to the Z:\Blueiris\New nor the Z:\Blueiris\Stored folders (even after a restart of the Blueiris software).

What am I missing here?

I really do appreciate your help fenderman...

Storage folders are profile specific...Are you using multiple profiles?
 
OK, I got it working. I'm not really sure exactly what I did to make it work. I've got a cloned (in BI, and it's hidden) camera writing to a NAS device that isn't readily visible. If someone breaks in and steals my PC, I'll still have a recording of them doing it. Now if they cut the power before that, I'm screwed! I guess I need a UPS. Will it ever end? Lol

Now I just have to work out some issues with VPN and I'll be good...
 
all of my cameras record to a ts 451 qnap.. 4tb drives...24/7 running via network.. runs like a champ... just remember to connect nas drive before starting BI as a service!
