Hi. I live in a rural area and there have been a rash of break in's lately in my area. Recently, we even had a home invasion. So i was wanting to install a camera system with NVR that I can access over the internet as well has have motion recording. I would like at least 1 camera good enough to read a license plate that I can stealthy mound under a light fixture. Did I mention I'm on a tight budget and would not like to pay large cloud fees to access my system remotely.

As I attempted to research on my own, the amount of data is diverse and vast. I am overwhelmed. I do have a ton of Cat 5e cable. Some for indoor use, some for outside. So PoE seems reasonable. I welcome your suggestions. Thanks for you help.

Welcome EZ

Look in the cliff notes for a Dahua OEM starlight camera.
Look at the IPC-HDW5231xx model(s).
Look at @looney2ns recent reviews of cameras, there is a couple good models worth looking at.
IPCamTalk WiKi | IP Cam Talk

Note - stealthy mount .. probably not too stealthy for a good quality camera, if you look you should be able to ID any of the IP PoE cameras we like here. There are some "spy" type cameras.. but they're normally not producing as good images, and may cost more than larger cameras.

I have been reading the forum from top to bottom. I'm on the leaning toward scrapping the NVR and building a Blue Iris computer. Adding cameras 1 at a time. I think that way I can customize it better placing better cameras on my driveway, and some not as strong on the back corners of my house.

Don't build, buy a refurbed one. See Wiki at top of page about choosing hardware.
Also see the subject area LPR.

First, remember cameras are just like the police, they are good after the fact.
If you don't have a good security system for your home, that's the first order of business.
Have a security plan in place for your family, and practice said plan at least monthly.
When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. And in a rural area, that could be 30 minutes away.

Don't worry about stealth, they can only have a chance at being a deter-ant if they are seen.

Hi EZ

remember you can start with a small PoE switch or injector and get a decent IP PoE camera with an microSD card to start

If I get one of these refurbed computers....would i need to get a video card as well? would that help the cpu process the video better?
