IVMS inconsistent behaviour

I have a Hikvision DS-2CD2042WD-I bullet camera setup, but currently I don't have a NVR. I have thus decided to use the IVMS client software, together with the storage server, to manage my recordings. The problem is that motion detection is behaving erratically.
This morning I spent some time setting up motion capture. For about 10 minutes it seemed to work, recording every time it detects motion. But then it stops and hasn't worked since then.
Also the IVMS client software frequently shows a error that says the camera cannot be found.

This is all very bothersome. Is there something I can do to get more consistent behaviour out of this? Will it be easier once I get a NVR?
