I have been using the 5241 for many years strictly for LPR duties. I have had day time dialed in since I got it but night time is hit or miss. I am trying to set the night mode to B&W and when I do that, it just changes back to auto. I have tried this in IE 11 and Chrome but it does not seem to save. I have tried switching to "Full Time", hit save, go back to the night profile, switch to B&W, hit save. Then change back from full time to "Day/Night". And it reverts back to auto instead of B&W.

I use the "schedule" profile.

While I think the "Day/Night" profile will work, the problem is that it decides when to change based on the light sensor. When it does, its often too dark for the camera to focus properly and you end up with an out of focus LPR cam. The same can happen changing from Night to Day.

Using the Schedule, I set the Night profile to come on approx 45 minutes before sunset and back to day 30 minutes after sunrise. This insures adequate light to focus. Yes I have to adjust this 3-4 times per year to account for the seasons. Its not a precise thing that has to be done more frequently than that, and it takes 5 minutes.

The alternatives are
1- Leave it in B&W both day and night. If only for LPR, it shouldnt matter in most scenes.
2- Use the SunriseSunset utility

Thanks, I was running entirely b&w with a schedule for day/night but still had lack luster results at night. Probably need to go back to it and dial it in for the night profile.

interesting problem.
I think I'm running "Night" profile full time. with Ir Illumination set to auto. and I'm trying to think if I selected B&W...but i must have because it's B&W 24/7. The main result is that it's not focus hunting anymore.
My other cams can get a look at the vehicle. Esp, if they drive around back and get lit up by 3 cams in back.

So what happens in the 45 minutes before sunset when your cam goes to night profile and its not 'dark' yet? Does it still capture plates? The issue with mine is if it switches over before it's actually dark, then I don't think I get any captures because of the high (1/2000) exposure setting. Its dark and I don't think it reflects IR during daylight? Does that make sense?

So starting while still good daylight to about 45 min after sunset (which is 20:17 currently) from last night.
We had storms popping up in the area from about 6pm on so light conditons were all over the place with lightning, dark clouds, light again, dusk, etc

Notice also my angle sucks in that the street runs due east/west and at dusk the camera is staring into the west sun which also means very dark on the plates going away from it.

Notice the 2nd capture (last one on day schedule) is not great, still in color (I had it changing at 19:30)

So pictures 3,4 and 5 are all on night profile but its still semi daylight? As soon as I switch to night profile I go dark due to exposure setting.

Yep.

It switched at 19:30 to night settings
(ignore the day image, it just doesn't refresh that fast while viewing the camera interface)

I wonder if you have a backlight setting? HLC maybe? I dont run any at night

Can this be accomplished through BI? I believe BI lets you send commands?

Yep, either use the utility or the commands in BI. Both options are presented here:

Personally I use the utility.

When I use BI with presets and schedules to send commands for day/night/focus to the Dahua LPR's, what profile should the cams be set to in their UI? General, full time, day/night or general?
