Initial setup Not recording problem

I am just starting to set up BI. I think i am missing something very obvious in the setup process. I think it is not recording 24/7 (direct to disk). It is however recording clips. It is also generating files in the "new" directory. The reason i think it is not recording, is two fold. first, there is no red dot at the upper right unless there is a trigger event on one of the cameras. second, there appear to be big gaps in the recorded time line at the bottom of the page.

Did you set up cam 'Properties', 'Record', to 'Continuous'?

Nope! That seems like a good idea! That seems to be it. Thanks. I did not see mention of this setting in the videos or Wiki.

What does "Triggered + Continuous each" do (see below)? Is this likely desired?




Now that it seems to record, let squeeze in a couple more questions:
1) Is there any reason to record to "New" then move to "Stored" both on the same HDD? Right now i have "New" as 10GB and 7 days (10 GB might be more like 4 hrs?), and Stored as 5000 GB. I think @fenderman might have been suggesting something with regards to this, but am not clear on this yet.
2) I saw mention of limiting recordings to 1 hr for some reason (ease of use?). Should this be done? If so is it done in the camera "Record" tab or on the global settings under the "folders" section of "clips and archiving"?

From BI Help:

"For each profile, you may choose how video will be recorded. You may choose from:
When triggered. Select if you want to record only when the camera is triggered by motion or another source.

Continuous. Select to record non-stop, which is desirable in some surveillance situations.

Periodic (Every X minutes for Y seconds). Use this option to create evenly spaced recordings of a specific duration. If you specify a small duration (such as 0.1 seconds), the net effect is similar to that of the JPEG periodic recording, except you have the option of combining these images into a larger movie file by using the Combine or cut each option. Blue Iris will align the recording times if the period evenly divides a day. For example, if you select to record every 15 minutes, recordings will occur on the hour, and :15, :30 and :45 minutes past the hour.

Triggered + Periodic. Combines "when triggered" with period. If you set the duration to 0 seconds, a single frame will be captured. When used with the "combine or cut" option, the effect will be a time-lapse video with normal speed recording only when the camera is triggered.

Triggered + Continuous. This option is similar to the "Triggered + Periodic" mode with the important difference that the file is recorded at a normal playback rate and does not require "combine or cut" in order to create a continuously recorded file."

I defer to another forum member's expertise here. I use 'when triggered' and have very small files, all folders on a 1 TB.
