I finally got some of my cameras installed and am ready to start with a good piece of software to run them. After reading a lot of posts and listening to fenderman, I'm going with BI. I will have a little bit to learn I'm sure but I should be okay.
I know I will install this on a BI only computer. Can I view it on another computer in my home too or when I'm on the road? I'm sure I read there is an app for the phone that goes with it also. I'll look for that after I get my computer setup with BI.
I do want to ask anyone though that is familiar with BI, when first starting out is there anything I should do right away after installing the software? Any words of wisdom that I may have missed in all of the posts about BI?

you can port forward, it wont be as secure though...this issue is not unique to blue iris, you would have to do the same for any NVR.
 
Have you ever dealt with AT&T? :smash: I had a great router until they decided I had to upgrade and now I have to use theirs and they don't like to help do things like this.

That's what I'm going to do for now. My router doesn't support VPN, and I paid too much just a few months ago to change it right now. I've been trying to find a way around this with no success. Eventually I'll come up with some work around.

Personally, I port-forward. I don't know if it's because I picked a high port number to forward (63080, instead of the the usual ports <80/81>), but I haven't seen any connections from IP addresses that haven't been me or my family.

I know that VPN is the safest method of remote access, but I'm a lot more comfortable with the security of the web server that comes with Blue Iris, in contrast to how not comfortable I was with the web servers that come on the cameras/DVRs.

Sure. When you port-forward, you get to pick the port number that gets used on the Internet-side of your router.
