I bet a lot of you belong to the "HVAC crapped out at the worst time" club.

The best cleaner I have ever used is Nu-Brite Condenser Coil Cleaner. Works great, just as advertised. Easy to use, doesn't kill your grass or plants. After you mix it with water and spray it on, wait about 15 minutes. As long as you wet the coils pretty well, it foams like crazy. The grime and junk in / on your coils will ooze off. Great stuff, not a bad price either.

I lightly mist my condenser first, which really helps the cleaner travel on the coils and get all the junk.

Had ours freeze up last summer—turns out it was a clogged drain line backing up the condensate. Shop vac on the outside line cleared it in five minutes.
I run a half cup of bleach in the collection tray and the tube to the outdoors every spring to kill the algae.

Yeah, my parents just replaced both their downstairs units this past winter. 35 years old and they were still working but Dad thought it best to change them out since he didn't want to run the risk of them dying in the middle of summer. They are old and I don't think they could take the heat if they died all of a sudden. They live in the Atlanta area which can get quite hot but they still didn't use it that much compared to me in Florida. I think some of those old unit last this long due to infrequent use.
