Concepts on having a better security camera setup:

Notice, you do not see any security cameras in the background here .. I would put one at eye level by the front door ( there could be a ring door bell camera, not certain .. still I like one at face level ) ..

Also I like cameras about at the top of the garage level ..

Lessons:

More Cameras,
Better Cameras,
Better Placement of Cameras,

Get good low light coverage of the street approach ..

It's a tragedy that the homeowner didn't send them over the rainbow bridge.

My bro lives in a high-rise condo near Spaghetti Junction in Atlanta. He woke up one night to find a bullet hole (9mm) in one of the windows (4th floor) and it lodged in a interior wall. Apparently, it was shot by a drug thug person from the ground floor of a hotel across the street. He's regretting living that close to the city.

Never leave a firearm in a vehicle. It does you no good in the empty vehicle.

Long time ago, someone fired a 357 round at my parents windows out in the country. It went through the small wood strip dividing both window panes, through the living room and dining room, into the kitchen where it struck the old oil stove and bounced into the sink. No idea why it happened.

Lucky for them nobody was home at the time, or they'd have been pursued by armed folk.

Also once investigated a tire that was rapidly losing air, and pulled a 9mm bullet from the steel belt. Had to have happened at a hiking trail we were parked at.

I used to live and work in Clayton County, '72 to '74. That's where I got my start in traffic signal maintenance working for the county there. Paid the bills for the next 31 years, 29 of those in Silicon Valley, CA.

I went through there in '04 going to my mom's funeral and couldn't recognize the place. The small town of Mountain View was gone, gobbled up by the ATL airport. Life stands still for no one and time marches on....

Sorry, but I have to disagree with the title. They obviously got a decent haul, a handgun from the truck. Not bad and not one of them got shot or identified.
