I remember that BI only recommended H.264. Has that changed?

You can use H265, but most have found that H264 results in better images and the storage savings of H265 don't appear as great as marketed. YMMV.

But still no to Smart Codec options, or any options after the 264 like a + or an H, etc. should be avoided.
