I've been using a Hikvision DS-2CD3332 Turret camera to monitor my front yard for several years and recently found out that it has a security flaw that I would like to circumvent. I believe that the camera is grey market so I can't upgrade to the latest version of firmware to fix the security issue. After discovering the issue I've been accessing the camera via VPN, but that's not an optimum solution for me.
I figure I have two options. I could replace the camera, or use software such as Blue Iris. I've installed a demo version of BI but I don't see that it will do what I want.
Currently my Hikvision camera records to an old D-Link NAS when it sees motion anywhere in the video, and it sends an email when it sees someone cross a virtual line. I have drawn a line across the sidewalk leading to the front door with the thought that if anybody wants to break into my house then the first thing they will do is ring the doorbell to see if anybody is home. This has worked for me on three occasions when people were casing my house. I received an email on my phone with a snapshot of what the camera saw when triggered, I opened an App on my phone to monitor the camera, and then when it looked like the person was up to no good I was able to trigger a loud siren at my house to scare them off.
Line traversal and motion detection for recording are separate functions. Motion detection only records. It does not send an email alert. Only line traversal sends an email. This has worked quite well for me with false alarms being quite rare.
Looking through BI I see how to set up motion detection, and I see how to set up zone crossing, but I don't see how to manage them independently. I don't see how I can do the same thing in BI that I do with the built in camera software. Have I just missed it?
I have considered how I might be able to use zone crossing with multiple zones to replace my current method, but reviewing past events suggests that some of the action would be missed. For example, one time two guys walked down my driveway and into my front yard, one guy held back and the other walked to my front door which triggered line traversal and I received an email. The person that held back was giving the guy at the door hand signals to knock and such, and at the same time he was looking across the front of my house and at things in the yard. The guy at the door walked into the front yard to join his buddy, and they stood there moving their arms around, pointing at the house, and walking only short distances. I watched and decided it was time for them to go so I hit the siren to scare them off. Because I was using motion detection across the full video frame I caught all of the action. I saw them as soon as they hit the end of the driveway heading into my front yard, what they did while they were there, and I followed them all the way out. They were recorded the entire time they were there even when they were standing still and just moving their arms around since I have motion sensitivity turned up pretty high.
If I was using zone crossing in BI, even with multiple zones, it's my understanding that recording would only be triggered when an object moves between two zones. So unless the pre and post record times were cranked way up, then some of the action would be missed.
Does BI have a way to behave similar to the Hikvision features that I've been using? Perhaps there's some feature setting that I've missed in the demo?
