This squirrel just missed being lunch for the hawk. I have a couple of these 'close encounter' clips where the predator goes away hungry and the squirrel lives another day. Makes you wonder what their success rate is.

Very fast squirrel

I once saw a hawk nab a squirrel that was halfway up a tree trunk. The hawk's momentum threw them both out into the street. Then they wrestled for about 10 seconds before the hawk pinned down the squirrel. Squirrel was almost lunch but hawk got spooked when he saw me watching and flew off. I went to find a blood trail in the azaleas bushes where the squirrel had run. No blood but that squirrel's eyes were as big as saucers and he was shaking as he stood there looking back at me as if to say "did you just fucking see what happened?". Eventually he gained his composure then ran up the tree.

My best squirrel hawk story. My dogs were out on the golf course in the early morning chasing a squirrel. The dogs and the squirrel were at full speed, making high speed turns, The hawk swooped in and grab the squirrel, and flew off. The dogs skidded to a halt and just looked, what the hell just happened was their expression.

Wish I had video
