Ethernet, POE, Gigabit Switch, Which One Do I Need?

Generally it's a better idea (cheaper in the long run) to run more cables instead of putting a switch at the other end, but sometimes it can make sense to do that. I've had this in a shed for 3 years with no issues. Currently unavailable on Amazon but basically the same thing as the link above...

Internet Speeds: What do you have?

Well it's been 5 years since starting this thread and I just upgraded our internet for the first time since starting this thread.....to FIBER! We were paying $40/month for 25/3 with 250 GB data cap and maybe 3-4 times/year getting hit with $15 extra because we were going over out data limit...

    OTA TV Stuff...

I have HDHomeRun (2 tuner) for a few years and it works great. I've only ever paid for cable 3 months ever, this was 13 years ago and it was a $5/month promo I cancelled at the end of the 3 months. HDHomeRun works great for the VERY limited live TV we watch. Mainly large sporting events and...

Happy ending: Attempted heist of neighbor's trailer

This is awesome about the driveway sensor across the road. I have one (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07Y41NVZC?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title) across my driveway that I have a zwave window/door sensor tied into. When someone pulls into my driveway, it dings the bell and triggers the...

    SOLD: Boobie Cam (IPC-HDBW4231F-E2-M) 2.8MM

I bought this from Andy (empiretechandy) last October. I installed it for 3 or 4 days on a 2x4 under my covered porch but realized it wasn't going to work how I thought so I pulled it down and it's been sitting in a box on a shelf since. Essentially brand new, both cameras work perfectly (see...

    Dahua DMSS App.

At this point, could it be worth trying a new VPN host? If using a dedicated machine with blue iris, you could use that computer, or maybe drop $50 on a raspberry pi? There are some good and easy options to set up a VPN service on a PI. Then you can block the NVR from access to the outside and...

Making a reflective focus target for LPR setup

Unfortunately I know exactly what is underneath the floorboards and it isn't money, it's spiders. Lots and lots of spiders. One that even crawled down my arm 45 minutes after I came inside after spending an hour or two under there. I spent way to many hours in the 18" of space between the dirt...

Making a reflective focus target for LPR setup

Interesting. I've got the rear plate of all my previous vehicles hanging on the wall of my barn. There's even a license plate nailed to a door of my house that must be covering a hole or something. It's been painted over dozens of times I'm sure and I never noticed it until I was down on the...

Pretty neat. Wouldn't an old and new license plate work well too?

Review-IP Villa Outdoor Doorbell Station & Indoor Monitor Kit

I actually found that video while looking up stuff for home assistant (I recently moved from domotoicz to home assistant) and didn't get very far into the video before I realized I should check ipcamtalk to see if there were any reviews of this camera before wasting my time watching the video...

Review-IP Villa Outdoor Doorbell Station & Indoor Monitor Kit

I'd be interested in just the doorbell camera and mount and would treat it as just another camera. It would be a replacement for a 5231 that is higher and off to the side of the actual front door. Don't have any use for a dedicated monitor in my house and don't need another switch. Edit...

My new SD29204UE-GN was delivered today via air mail

I have an outside temp sensor that used to update the OSD to display the temp. Last winter that function broke and I just haven't fixed it so it's holding the last temp it saw. I was using a script I stole from the internet and I'm pretty sure that broke but since I didn't write it I can't fix...

My new SD29204UE-GN was delivered today via air mail

Hope the new PTZ is ok....if not at least I have video evidence of why it's broken.... He's not a great delivery driver, but I bet he's a Cornhole master. It was at least a good shot.

    Dahua DMSS App.

So far, I really like the new app. The IVS alerts (messages) is much better/easier to navigate than the old gDMSS app. I like how it breaks it down by day too. Also, note, I have a dahua NVR and the NVR is the only device I added (instead of adding each camera individually). On the old app...

Surprised so many people are OK with WPA2-PSK

I tried them once before as well, many years ago. Also didn't have the best luck but I'm sure they've come a long way in the last decade.

Surprised so many people are OK with WPA2-PSK

You could try some Ethernet over power line adapters. Powerline networking. That way you get hardwired reliability without running new cat5 cables.

New guy looking for help on current build list

If you haven't purchased already, I'd suggest getting a 1,000ft spool of cat5 instead of 250 ft. Especially if you plan to add more cameras. And you never know when you might want to hardwire a TV or steaming device or something. Also for my set-up I just have a rule in my router that blocks...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

OpenVPN doesn't do anything to stop your devices from reaching out to the internet on their own. It only allows you reach into your network safely to access devices you've banned from reaching out on their own. You will need to manually block any device from accessing the internet in your...

    Motorcycle "Dash Cam"

The quality is better on the raw file, YouTube knocked it down a bit. This screen shot is just the video paused on my phone. I connected to the DVR's WiFi and pretty easily downloaded a couple of the one minute clips to my phone. I think it took like 15 seconds or so for each clip to download...

    Motorcycle "Dash Cam"

The camera vibrates too much. It gets worse as the RPM's increase. The sound is coming from the DVR which is under the seat. It's not securely moumted so the noise is it vibrating against a piece of plastic it's sitting on. That'll be fixed tonight.

    Motorcycle "Dash Cam"

Got the camera installed. Looks pretty out of the way and I was able to hide the wiring pretty well. I chose to put the camera behind the windshield for extra protection. With the shortest cable (6ft) I had no problem getting to the area under the seat where the DVR is. The app seems to be...

Dahua gDMSS / iDMSS Plus free in the app stores.

Mine wants to update (I've had the paid version for over a year now) but I noticed they now want access to my devices location. Can't figure out why they would want that. I haven't updated.... Also, I'm super cheap when it comes to apps and have only ever purchased 5 total...this one being the...

    Motorcycle "Dash Cam"

These seem pretty cool and it's nice to have your first hand experience with it. It looks like they're coming out with a new dual camera model in July. That's temping but at $328 I'm not so sure. Probably a good value for 2 cameras with a DVR and wifi though. But toss in a decently sized SD card...

How to get push notifications through firewall - working finally

Right that's exactly my point. I previously had EVERYTHING coming from my NVR/Cameras blocked from reaching the internet. Now, I have a rule (before the block rule) that allows the NVR to get out via port 443. This allows me to receive the push notifications, but hell I might as well just...

How to get push notifications through firewall - working finally

Yes I'm subscribed, and I'm on Android. (gDMSS is the Android app and iDMSS is apple) and I've been getting notifications all day today. And here's a snippet from my logs. I'm assuming you saw 2195 as the SPT? You can see mine changes. It increases up by 7 I think for each IVS event, and also...
