    DMSS & Push Notifications

True but isn't it more like UPnP where they're only opened as needed when initiated from the inside? Open ports (i.e., port forwarding) were what I referring to as a less secure configuration since ANY one from the Internet could see it open, unless you whitelisted the source IPs from the...

    DMSS & Push Notifications

I figure it’s more secure to use P2P vs opening ports to the Internet.

    DMSS & Push Notifications

I just took the plunge and enabled P2P for seamless notifications. I have VLANs set up so that the NVR can only reach out to the Internet and can't access my trusted network. I have a crazy complex NVR password in my password manager, so brute force would never happen. I figure this is a risk...

    EmpireTech NV41AI-8P-4KH or NVR8CH-AI

As the other poster mentioned, the AI NVR has PoE built in so you don't need a separate PoE switch. That alone was worth it to me.

    EmpireTech NV41AI-8P-4KH or NVR8CH-AI

I would get the AI version if you can afford it, which is what I have. I agree it's better to enable AI features on the cameras, but you never know if the NVR will add AI features faster than the cameras. For example, I'm holding out for animal detection or SMD with defined AI areas so that it...

    NVR8CH-8P-2AI Latest FW Update

I just finished the update and there are some significant improvements with the UI. I can now use my Brave browser and everything renders beautifully. The PTZ menu is a fraction of the size it used to be, which was a suggestion I made to Andy a while ago. I'm very happy with the improvements...

    Recommendation for Animal detection

I currently have my Dahua cams plugged into a Dahua NVR. How would I get the cameras to talk to the PI?

    Recommendation for Animal detection

Ah ok. I didn't realize I'd need a separate PC running 24/7. If I go the separate PC route, I'll likely just use Blue Iris at that point.

    Recommendation for Animal detection

Interesting. I've read other threads about Scrypted. I don't have a Mac but I use iPhone and iPad. Will that work? Or does it need to be a Mac?

    Recommendation for Animal detection

I have the 5442 S3s and EmpireTech AI NVR. I'm bummed that there's no animal detection like there is human and motor vehicle. SMD sets off so many false alarms, so it's hard to catch animals that way, and I don't think I can restrict to a detection zone, can I? I know that's possible with...

Wow dude. Who still uses fakt chequers? They're a joke when it comes to anything controversial. Bought and paid for by TPTB.

Hikvision NVR firmware 3.4.93 to 4.60.005?

I have the EmpireTech (Dahua) NVR, and there's a hard reset button on the "motherboard". Not sure if Hikvision has the same, but look into it before buying a new unit.

    WebSocketServer.exe?

The pop up never goes away when accessing the camera UI if you don’t enable their plugin. I ended up enabling the NVR plugin because it has important features I want, but I locked it down into submission using my host firewall so it can’t “call out”. The camera UI plugin doesn’t seem to add...

Camera Placement for Detect vs Identify - Just Some Thoughts

There's some truth to that. I did follow the advice on this forum to not place my cams too high, which I complied with for the most part. I'm very pleased with the placement actually, I just realized that I like getting quick notifications of human activity around my house even if I can't...

Camera Placement for Detect vs Identify - Just Some Thoughts

I recognize your points being made. Makes sense. For me, I’d have to have a ton more cameras to comprehensively identify someone given there is a lot space to cover and a lot of potential entry points. I’m sure if I was robbed I would go down that path. Perhaps I’d do a phase two in the future...

Camera Placement for Detect vs Identify - Just Some Thoughts

I have seven new 5442 S3s installed around my house. I have them at varying heights depending on location. Something I've learned over the last month or so since installing them is that I'm definitely more about detection vs identification. Fact is, criminals are going to masked anyway so I...

How to wire/install when soffits are too high?

I don't know your layout, but 10-12 ft doesn't seem too high IMO unless you're trying to identify someone at a door near the camera.

How to wire/install when soffits are too high?

This. I had a professional run the cabling after we discussed how best to do it. They've done this a million times and should have all kinds of ideas.

Smart camera, smart NVR, or both?

Is controlling shutter speed only available through an app like Blue Iris? I can't find it in my camera UI.

Smart camera, smart NVR, or both?

Thank you both. Regarding your FPS/bitrate examples, it’s counterintuitive to me. I thought higher FPS would yield better quality and would therefore require more processing/bandwidth, no?

Smart camera, smart NVR, or both?

So to summarize, use H.264H and CBR...but what bitrate if I have the 5442 S3s? I don't care about storage because it's cheap...I'd rather have optimal image quality.

Smart camera, smart NVR, or both?

My NVR encoding options are as follows: H.265, H.264, H.264B and H.264H. Which one is best?
