New (used) Blue Iris server!! (Thanks to fenderman and bp2008!)

So when I first installed my 8 cameras (4MP Hiks) last year, I didn't have a computer to run them with. I had no budget at the time to buy one, so I re-purposed my gaming PC, which wasn't getting much use. It's a bit old, but has an i7-2600K and 16GB of RAM, so it was good enough. Fast forward...

How easy is it for someone to access my camera?

Cameras are notorious for being easy to hack, and should be treated as hostile devices, from a network standpoint. My security cameras aren't even wireless, and they are still isolated on their own VLAN, with no path to the outside world. I presume your camera runs on wifi? I would lock down...

New to BI - hardware and some Q's

It's perfectly alright to use a second NIC for your 'camera' network. I've done the same thing; its best to keep them isolated. Not only for network traffic, but for security reasons as well. My cameras are all VLAN'd away from the rest of the network. One word of advice...ensure that your POE...

    Set up with Team Viewer?

What he said. You can install TeamViewer as a backup option if you want, but I would avoid doing so. Set up a VPN instead, and use Windows Remote Desktop.

BI4 Setup - Am I doing something wrong?

    - Just updated to 4.3.3.2 - Cranked the three 30FPS cameras down to 15FPS, and the remaining five units down to 10FPS - Before doing the above, turned off HA entirely just to see what would happen...the CPU usage went up slightly, but not by much - Turned HA back on, but left VPP disabled; also...

BI4 Setup - Am I doing something wrong?

So I finally got all my new Hikvisions installed. They all work fine, and I went into the camera setup for each unit and set it's resolution, framerate, time, etc. I added all the cameras to Blue Iris...at first I had them set to record continuously, then last night I changed them to motion...

Blue Iris issues on Virtual Machine

Ok, great. I know that post is from a different thread, but reading things like this is discouraging me from going with the VM route. I'm thinking it would work much better if I install Windows Server on bare metal, and run BI on the physical machine. @nayr, would it cause too much of a...

Blue Iris issues on Virtual Machine

Oh, that sucks. Is it easy enough to re-activate the license?

Blue Iris issues on Virtual Machine

Alright, thanks guys. I've ordered my cameras...all eight of them are 4MP. I'll probably give them a try with a VM first using the trial version of BlueIris, before I enter the license info. If it doesn't work that well, I can just re-build it as a physical PC.

    IPCT Members Only Promo!

Thumbs up for Nelly's Security! They're awesome to deal with, and are happy to answer any questions you may have, no matter how many times you bug them!! :D I can't wait for my Hikvisions to get here so I can set them up! Thanks, guys!!

Blue Iris issues on Virtual Machine

Sweet, thanks!! I guess I'll give it a try with the VM first, and see how it goes. How many cameras are you running? What resolution are they recording at?

Blue Iris issues on Virtual Machine

How many cameras have you got? I plan to buy eight 4MP cameras. The hardware is powered by an i7-2600K, and 16GB of RAM. I'm debating right now whether to leave it as a dedicated box, or run it as a VM.

Blue Iris issues on Virtual Machine

Sorry, I know this thread is old, but are there any updates on this? I was planning on running BI on a dedicated box, but it would be nice if I could run it as a VM instead. It would still be the same box, but it would just be running one or two other VM's alongside it.

    Camera hacked behind VPN?

Good advice. I plan to keep mine on a separate network entirely, lol.

    Network Problems

How easy would it be for you to take the camera down? I'd be interested to know what happens if you plug the camera into your network normally, i.e. not going into the NVR. You'll need a power source obviously, whether that be an adaptor, PoE injector, or PoE switch. Is 192.168.1.5 possibly the...

    High resolution IP camera system

You don't necessarily need 30fps all the time. Having multiple HD cams at full resolution and FPS takes a lot of CPU power. That said, I would imagine you would want quality CAT6 cable, preferably shielded. To keep things clean, terminate your runs into a CAT6 patch panel, and mount it on one...

    Are these rebranded Hiks?

Thanks for all the advice. It appears to me that the Hikvision domes are a bit better in that respect. If they're as pictured, there's nothing blocking the IR like there is with the Costco ones. That being said, the domes will still have IR reflection issues if they don't get mounted properly...

    Are these rebranded Hiks?

That's a great point...good thing I haven't ordered any cameras yet!! Will I have the same problem with the Hikvision domes that Nelly's sells?

What ethernet cable for Camera: DS-2CD2042WD-I & NVR: DS-7608NI-I2/8P

Not really...I just picked CAT6 because it's more in line with current standards than CAT5e. And if you're going outside or in walls, then its better to go with shielded cable. The price difference between CAT5e and CAT6, or UTP vs STP would be fairly minimal. Especially if you order from a...

    Are these rebranded Hiks?

Where can I get them? Nelly's only seems to have them in the 4MP variety. They're out of stock (although I was told they should be in soon) at the moment, but they are a bit of a price jump at $165, especially after factoring in currency exchange for me. I'd prefer to have something with a...

What ethernet cable for Camera: DS-2CD2042WD-I & NVR: DS-7608NI-I2/8P

Here are two choices for a 100ft CAT6 STP (shielded) cable from Amazon and Monoprice. Monoprice also has other lengths and colors available. Monoprice is the best for cables, if you live in the States. But if you have Amazon Prime, their 2 day shipping is awesome. Amazon also has the Monoprice...

    Are these rebranded Hiks?

Awesome, thanks, @fenderman! I've already ordered my PoE switch, lol. I think I might give these cams from Costco a shot. Costco will take just about anything back without any hassle, so I think its worth buying them, only opening one pack, and plugging it in just to see if it works. If it...

    Are these rebranded Hiks?

I'd prefer to get something with warranty and US firmware, but thanks anyway. @nayr, have you seen these cams before? They'd be cheaper than going through Nelly's for me, that's why I'm wondering. But I couldn't seem to find out if they're compatible with BlueIris.

    Are these rebranded Hiks?

I just discovered this 2 pack of domes on Costco's website. I can't seem to find a model number though, so no way to tell if they are just re-branded Hiks. Has anyone seen these before? Costco.ca -- http://www.costco.ca/Swann-3MP-Fixed-Lens-Dome-Camera---2-pack.product.100235617.html Costco...

POE IP camera non compliant with 802.3af ... Looking for cable

Perfect, that'll work! :D If I really need to get to the cameras directly, I can just RDP into that PC. Even if I don't have my laptop, I've got an RDP app for Android...its a tad clunky, but in a pinch, it works, lol.

POE IP camera non compliant with 802.3af ... Looking for cable

For the camera firmware web interface? That's fine. But would the app still show the images from the cameras, via the web server built into BI? (My apologies, I haven't used BI or the mobile app, so I have no idea how it works yet!) Or would I need to install that proxy application that @bp2008...

POE IP camera non compliant with 802.3af ... Looking for cable

I've been looking at doing this myself...would the BlueIris mobile app still work though, as long as I'm connected to my home network? (Either via wifi or VPN) Or would I be strictly restricted to RDP'ing into that PC?

Where to by Hikvision? - How to tell I got a US version?

I said this already in another thread, but if you want a 'real' US English version, buy from a trusted dealer like Nelly's. They fully warranty the cameras too, in case anything goes wrong. That being said, I've read on this forum (not from my own personal experience) that if you use a PC with...

    Best strategy for remote access?

Consumer grade switches are known as "unmanaged" switches. They simply let network traffic flow, and they lack the features of a managed switch. Managed switches are, indeed, enterprise grade hardware. I am not a network engineer, so @nayr could give you more information than I could on managed...

POE IP camera non compliant with 802.3af ... Looking for cable

Ok, great, that helps a lot. So I should be good as far as the power consumption goes? The switch is the JGS516PE by NetGear.
