    EMT? What is that?

Good/bad idea to mount a camera to a tree?

How high should a camera for LPR duty be mounted? I was thinking of mounting it above the average person's reach to avoid vandalism. I suppose I could create a lockable top for the birdhouse that I'm going to install the cameras in.

Good/bad idea to mount a camera to a tree?

Whoa - that sucker is WAY up there! How high do these type of cameras typically need to be? I'm using a couple for LPR duty and I thought folks stated to keep them not too high off the ground.

Good/bad idea to mount a camera to a tree?

The problem is if I get a pole, it's fairly costly for one with a large diameter (the ones I've seen were over $300 for 8 ft) and then I have to dig a 3 ft or deeper hole in rocky soil. I'm hoping that a large diameter tree will move no more than the typical 8 foot 3" pole I can buy at home depot.

Good/bad idea to mount a camera to a tree?

Yeah that's the thing - my trees are fairly old oaks. I'm more worried about them dying and falling over at this point than growing much more lol.

Good/bad idea to mount a camera to a tree?

Yes, even though the CAT6e cable is shielded with plenum and is rated for direct burial, I was going to use 3/4" schedule 40 pvc conduit since it's so much cheaper than the liquid tight flexible version. This stuff is only about $3 per 10 feet: JM eagle 3/4 in. x 10 ft. PVC Schedule 40...

Good/bad idea to mount a camera to a tree?

I've got a bunch of big oak trees at the front of the property. I'd like to use some of them for observation and LPR cameras, as well as having a couple of cameras pointing back towards the house. Does anyone have a recommendation for a band mount or any kind of specific mount for a tree? I...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

Yeah that seems to be the general consensus. Fortunately my mom is going to sell the house so this is just a temporary solution. GAWD do't get me started on the People's Republic of California. They'd prosecute a homeowner for defending themselves.

    10/100 vs gigabit PoE switch

Excellent information. Thank you so much! As to the building of a VPN.......hmmmmm........I just looked that up. It's kind of confusing. I'm sure I'll figure it out. Can you point me to a good resource on how to do this that's easy to understand?

    10/100 vs gigabit PoE switch

Thanks for the detailed reply. The 4MP cameras are running at 2688x1520 @ 20 FPS. As it is, the system does suffer from a weird slow down then speeding up of the images on video every so often. I haven't been able to figure out the cause. I do run the cameras on a substream and then if I'm...

    10/100 vs gigabit PoE switch

I'm trying to organize my media closet right now. I have a need for 78 ethernet connections, Currently my 14 security cams are hooked up to a LTS NVR. I'm going to be building a PC to run Blue Iris. The Blue Iris Wiki says I can use a 10/100 24 port ethernet switch. Is there any reason to...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

100% correct. But dealing with mom isn't easy. She's 85 and slowing down. She wants to sell but she also has tax consequences to consider. As I stated in the above post, we're going to beef up the security around the house, fix it up. Hopefully mom will agree to put it on the market by next...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

I agree with you. We've got a bid to have a heavy and robust front gate installed that covers the alcove to the entryway. The vagrants have been brazenly trying to crowbar (successfully a couple of times now) their way through a very heavy and thick wood door. They must have thought there were a...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

I like the idea of the powerline communicators. I have a couple of old units that I'm gonna test out. This house has old wiring so who knows if it'll work. It's worth a try though. I also like the idea of adding more sirens. The alarm company is coming out to do some more work so I'm going to...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

SF has severe rent control. It's so bad that I have a landlord tenant attorney on my speed dial. If you make a mistake on who you rent to as a "house sitter", you're screwed. That person, once he establishes tenancy, can rent the remainder of the house out room by room. They can pretty much...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

I suppose we don't need cams on the 2nd floor. Recording to SD cards is a great idea. It's not so much as the police don't care as much as their hands are tied. There's just not much they can do. They've expressed their frustration when we've had them come over to file a report. Adding more...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

I'll look into routing it from the basement. No idea if it's even possible since the house is on a slope and we don't have a full basement. No simple solutions. Ugh!

Need advice on a wireless cam system

In fact we already have an alarm system. It's not a deterrent though as these people know the cops don't give a hoot due to the folks that run the city and state. It's a 3 story house so the crawl space in the attic really doesn't work for us. Even if that were possible it would be a massive...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

Thank you! I'm thinking since no one lives in the house, for now we could just run some CAT6 cable inside to a couple of locations and let the wire lay on the ground, as unsightly as it may be. The cameras for the basement and backyard would have to be wireless however as that distance is just...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

None of us live in that house. We'd like to both record the events and view them remotely. We just installed a fiber internet connection at the house, so internet speed won't be an issue. Running CAT6 cable would involve much more expense. We'd have to tear out lathe and plaster walls and...

Need advice on a wireless cam system

My mom has a house that she's not living in. Problem is it keeps getting vandalized and broken into. We want to set up a security camera system, but the house is very old and the interior walls are lathe and plaster. So running CAT6 cables through the walls would be very expensive. She's...

NVR vs PC for 20 cam system

Thanks for the link. Yes, I would be using Blue Iris. It looks like I need to stick with an Intel CPU. No video card will save me some money. I already have a spare computer case and PSU. I'm a little fuzzy on the type of processor I need however. My 14 older cameras are 4MP. These are...

NVR vs PC for 20 cam system

I have 14 older 4 MP cameras around the property. I want to add at least 2 more cams pointing back towards the house, and also a couple of license plate readers and overview cameras at the front of the property. It seems like I could easily build a new PC for what a 32 channel 4k NVR would cost...

Integrating LPR cams into my existing system

Yeah, it looks like I'm going to need to build a new PC to run the cameras I need. I will need two cameras for LPR duty as well as two additional observation cameras. Plus now I'm thinking of mounting some cameras facing back towards my house. So that's 6 new cameras added on to the existing...

Is it possible to add more than 16 cameras to a 16 camera NVR?

I have 14 IP cams on my LTS LTN8716 (Hikvision clone). I've seen posts on adding a PoE switch to add more cameras. But since my NVR is 16 channels, I can still only record 16 channels correct?

Integrating LPR cams into my existing system

Please bear with me. I'm a total newb at this. I have an existing 14 camera system with a NVR. The existing cameras are 4 MP IP cams: LTS CMIP1142W-28 4MP IR Outdoor Turret IP Security Camera The NVR is: 16 channel NVR so I have 2 open channels. This is a PoE NVR but I do not know if it is...

How to add license plate reader cams to an existing system

Thank you. I'm reading through the sub-forum now. And yes, there's a LOT to absorb. I understand technology, photography and videography for the most part. I do need to integrate that knowledge with ALPR tech, which I'm unfamiliar with.

How to add license plate reader cams to an existing system

Thanks for the great reply. I'm not sure if my LTS NVR is ONVIF compliant. I may need to upgrade it. This would be the ideal time since that system is now 6 years old. My existing cameras are high enough resolution Yes, I've seen the threads where folks are using non-ALPR cams. The one ALPR...

Recommended computer for ALPR with 2 cameras?

I'm a newb at this, but will an AMD Ryzen 7 work? Their current gen of CPU's are 8 or more cores and 16+ threads. The one in my 2 yr old PC has a 15k Passmark score. The newer Ryzens are even better.

How to add license plate reader cams to an existing system

Hello. This is my first post here. My goal is to add two automated license reader cameras to my existing system. I have a 14 camera system using a LTS LTN8716-P16 16 Channels Platinum NVR Network Video Recorder with LTS CMIP1142W-28 4MP IR Outdoor Turret IP Security Cameras. LTS Platinum NVR...
