    VPN Primer for Noobs

Right now you are just measuring your platform's connection speed that you are on which is not what you are trying to find out regarding your remote site's connectivity latency. You could try Pinging your remote site and see how long it takes to get a response back and compare it to your...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

That is good to know. It would be nice if OpenVPN could utilize multicore. Using the RPi3 would should free up overhead from the router. Should I connect the RPi3 to the router or the switch or does it not matter? Planned setup is cable modem > WiFi router smart switch > unmanaged poe switch

    VPN Primer for Noobs

Disclaimer: I'm still new to networking and ip cam setup so it may not make sense. Generally you want to get a baseline without VPN running to see what you're starting with. Then run the same configuration with open VPN enabled. Not sure, but you're showing two different screen shots-- main...

    VPN Primer for Noobs

There's a program called Iperf that you could try. Personally I would send a compressed file across the VPN and off it and see. Also look at the taskbar network usage too. This is per Google fu

    VPN Primer for Noobs

Do you have a vlan set up for your cameras? I imagine if your router or switch has the capability you can control traffic by ip or subnet. For VPN server, is using a RPi3 fast enough for video streaming? I see that it has a fast ethernet port. I have an old dlink router(dir-850L) that is not...

    Dahua Starlight Varifocal Bullet Z5 7-35mm (IPC-HFW5231E-Z5)

Have you tried reloading the firmware? I could be something corrupt perhaps? I'm just guessing right now as I have not been able to set up my Z5 camera---still sitting in the box. Just looking from the pictures it does look odd but looks like it has to do with the lighting affecting it's...

    Blue Iris Computer and CPU

What kind of motherboard are you using? Does it come with the integrated Intel Graphics? I want to say that your issue is due to you not disabling your 3rd party graphics card. Yeah, but I think I may just be able to swing the varifocal into corridor mode and get the view I need hopefully.

I'll probably start off with 4 of the regular varifocals and get a z5 to try out and adjust from there. Seeing how these are in demand, I don't think I would have a problem getting rid of them if they don't work out for me. I might pick up the 2.8 fixed to try as well.

Thanks! It was a compromise to move into this area with all the life events taking place at once. It's something I'll have to get use to coming from living out in the countryside. Eaves are roughly 11-12ft with the lowest being about 8 near the front doorway.

    Network "Re-Design"

Bumping this old thread. I was curious as to why one would hook up cameras on separate switches that are attached to the backbone? Is it just some failsafe thing to do to prevent all cameras going out at once if the switch takes a dump?

    New guy to camera systems

Here's our new house which was prewired for security cameras. The placements for the camera locations may not be optimal but I'm looking for the best location as well as reduce the numbers of cameras needed. I plan on installing some motion sensing flood lights for the back yard and side of the...
