    PTZ usage in residential?

That one could possibly work for my needs, too, brf.

    PTZ usage in residential?

I've got one location in which I'm thinking of installing a PTZ camera. It's on the large shed (we call it the micro-barn) about 60 ft. from the back of one corner of the house. That corner and side of the house is currently uncovered--either along the side or in its approaches, but it's also...

    Cabling: cat 5e or 6

*sigh* The cable I used is rated CM, which is more than sufficient. NEC residential low voltage cable standards aren't particularly demanding. Doesn't even have to be riser, much less plenum rated. I used to do this kind of thing for a living, Tony.

    Cabling: cat 5e or 6

The key word there being "long." For average runs (I doubt my longest run is more than perhaps 150 ft.) it doesn't matter. And, again: For challenging physical routing, stranded cable will be more immune to damage/disruption.

    Cabling: cat 5e or 6

What TonyR said. I ran Cat6 stranded to all my cameras because some of the physical routing was torturous and I already had a bag-full of Cat6 terminations for stranded cable. They're essentially very long patch cables :). But Cat5E is more than plenty for IP cameras.

Dahua Starlight Fixed Lens Turret (IPC-HDW4231EM-AS)

Hmmm... Somehow I missed this camera all along. This, with the 3.6mm lens, might be just about perfect to cover that corner where the back of the garage meets the back of the house.

    Mini-PTZ Give-Away Qontest

Thanks for the Grate Qontest, Q™! My hopes for the coming year... Hmmm... Continued reasonably good health for the love of my life, our furkids and me and no major disasters with home or cars. A couple more cams for the surveillance system would be nice, and maybe add an automation controller...

Warning about tool shipped with Dahua cams!

The housings are aluminium. The screws are allegedly some form of stainless steel. The result will be galvanic corrosion in the presence of moisture. Anti-seize might not be a bad idea.

Warning about tool shipped with Dahua cams!

    Are you certain it was a T9 driver and not a T10? Because I finally got a set of Torx drivers, plus a T10 and T15. My 5231's are a T10 and my 4231F-AS a T15.

It is. What browser are you using? I'm using Firefox and it puts up a requester asking me if I want to open or save the file. Have you checked your browser's default download directory to see if there's anything in there? N.B.: All config exports are named "configFileExport.backup". So, if...

Dahua IPC-HFW2831T-ZS image degradation (Synology surveillance station)

Sounds to me suspiciously like a bandwidth problem between camera and SS. Also, SY is right: Unless you're trying to capture flying wildlife in the yard, 26 FPS is way overkill. I keep mine set to 10 so recordings of events when I'm mobile don't take forever and a day. I'd use 15 if I could...

    Review-Dahua Starlight IPC-HDW5231R-ZE 800 meter capable ePOE

If I were doing it I'd be inclined to give it a light once-over with a medium grit emery cloth, wipe thoroughly with mineral spirits or acetone to remove any oils or other residues, prime with Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover Primer--two light coats w/in ±30 mins., let stand for 48 hours, very lightly...

Safe to run Cat6 Ethernet through same hole as AC Power?

One should never run communications cable of any type in close proximity to high-voltage/high-current service wiring. And, in fact, doing so in conduit is expressly forbidden in the National Electrical Code (NEC), to which most governmental units subscribe. Secondly: Installing Unshielded...

tool head broke off in set screw of Starlight Housing

I tell y'all what: I'll be acquiring proper Torx drivers for both the Dahua screw sizes I've seen before I touch that set screw in a Dahua camera ever again. In fact... <adds Torx drivers to shopping list> I'm going to be in a tool section at a store tomorrow. @EMPIRETECANDY, perhaps you could...

Has this inexplicable behavior been addressed: New Dahua IP Cam Profile Choice: Day/Night?? Summary: The cameras have a "Day/Night" profile setting (which is undocumented), but, when you select it, Camera -> Conditions -> Conditions -> Sensitivity is disabled. This doesn't seem to make sense.
