    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

The tree shadow problems are in the back yard. If I masked-off everywhere there were tree shadows, I'd essentially be masking-off everything. Oh well, it is what it is. Thanks for the feedback and suggestions, everybody!

    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

Problem is: We're on the outside of a curve in the road about two doors down in one direction, and we're a cross-street one door down in the opposite direction. So we get a lot of headlights sweeping the front yard. Shadows from trees when the wind blows, causing those shadows to move...

    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

Thing is: For my purposes, the el-cheapo Reolink wireless, battery-powered camera that used to be by the front door was more useful than these Dahua cameras + the Synology Surveillance Station. That isn't going to happen, but thanks for the suggestion.

    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

Motion detection was still triggering recording, but not notifications. As dark fell and the night progressed I started getting a bunch of notifications from the front two cameras. Looked at the recordings. Headlights. All headlights. I disabled notification on IVS. Tomorrow I'll probably...

    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

So far I'm finding line-crossing (tripwire) and intrusion detection only mildly more useful than motion detection, and even then only in certain, very limited circumstances. Lights coming on, headlights flashing across the lawn, shadows from trees blowing in the wind--all of these "false"...

IPC-HDW5231R-ZE Rhea V2.800.0000016.0.R.200430 Latest new firmware

He showed you in his two posts. In the first case it would appear he noticed it in the logs for his Internet border router. In the second case he ran a network diagnostic tool called Wireshark.

So, @EMPIRETECANDY, do you have any insight as to why, after installing DH_IPC-HX5X3X-Rhea_MultiLang_PN_Stream3_V2.800.0000015.0.R.200430, cameras are all-of-a-sudden trying to contact a server in Alibaba network space? @pilotsnipes, have you tried installing...

    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

Thanks for the help. Yeah. Like I said: I know both Tripwire and Intrusion detection work. I tested them with a line and a box right up near the camera, which is over and off to the side of the front porch. I had thought that might be the case, but it's unclear to me what to do with that...

    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

Yeah, @Holbs, that's one of the problems I have, right now. I think I'm going to have to put IVS off to another day. Neither the Tripwire I have drawn at the end of the driveway nor the Intrusion box I have up near the upper-right corner of the camera's coverage trigger when I walk through...

Ah, ok. No, I left it on Tripwire. But then it let me draw boxes, anyway?

    Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

Hmmm... Can't seem to get an intrusion box configured. I draw it, hit "Save" and it tells me to begin drawing. I come back and the box is a line that isn't even in the same place, but starts in the same place as where I started drawing the box. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. And...

Ah, thanks, @aristobrat. That's especially handy in my case, because some of the Tripwires I want to set up will be near the edges of camera coverage. @biggen: Maybe my search fu isn't good, lately, but I have been looking up on "Dahua IVS" and the like. Line-Crossing (Tripwire) vs. Motion Detection?

The latest release of Synology Surveillance Station now has support for Dahua IVS. Before I go to the trouble of messing with it, is line-crossing any less susceptible than motion detection to "false positives" such as the shadows of trees moving on a sunny, windy day; headlights flashing...

Load Dahua Firmware Into X-Security (Re-Branded Dahua) Camera?

I have an X-Security model XS-IDPM985ZWH-2 IP camera that was gifted to me by a relative in Europe. It is the same form-factor as my Dahua IPC-5231R-ZE's, and the camera UI appears to be identical to them. In fact, other than it has no sound, it seems identical to the 5231's. The current...

Which ethernet cable would be best ?

You do understand that for lightning to destroy your electronics, possibly at both ends, it doesn't have to hit the cable directly, right? It just has to strike "near enough." ("Near enough" is highly variable, so I cannot put a number on it.) The longer and higher the "antenna" you're...

Which ethernet cable would be best ?

True. I wouldn't, because I don't like a lot of spare cable hanging around. Just the length needed + adequate service loop. I'm a bit of a neat freak where cabling is concerned :) My bigger issue with the airborne run is the lightning hazard. That's going to be a big ol' long antenna just...

By "Loco" you mean a wireless back-haul using purpose-built hardware, and I of course agree, but still he'll probably need to learn to fabricate cables.

Which ethernet cable would be best ?

Not to worry. It's not a dumb question. Common residential outlets have been equipped with grounding connections here in the U.S. since the mid-to-late 60's. Different plug, voltage, and frequency, but same result. That's why. To give the energy somewhere to go other than your house wiring...

What to do about this gutter on a conduit run?

This may seem counter-intuitive, but cabling in the ground is as susceptible to lightning damage as is airborne cable. Many a well pump has been lost to nearby lightning strikes. See @sebastiantombs' comments in the "which Ethernet cable" thread, re: STP cable installation. I've never done...

What to do about this gutter on a conduit run?

This is why it pays to research, research, research, then ask questions, first ;) The bandwidth demands for video surveillance cameras isn't particularly high, so I doubt you'll have problems.
