Thanks and sounds like a plan! If I went for the 4mm Hikvision it should definitely work for my front but I can also use it to test results at the side location as you say and then put it back at the front and figure out whether I go for the same cam but 6mm version or the 2231s... -

The self-crimped cable I used is very short in length, maybe 30 inches or so. And yes, I've just checked the wire sequence of the pre-made cable and if I turn the connector so that I'm looking at the underside of it, I see the colour sequence as I described it. The same is true for my...- freddyq

I thought there was a 6mm version of the Hikvision but just seen Andy's page and it's just the 2.8mm and 4mm so that makes my decision easier because it'll probably be the 2231 at the side and back. At the front I could put a 4mm version of the Hikvision to give me good clarity day and night... -

OK @DavidR1 I've run some tests with machine-terminated CAT5e cables. As before I ran the iperf server on the older Sony laptop and the client on the newer Dell laptop using the USB to ethernet adapter. Both USB ports on my Dell are USB3. Just been playing with this and comparing the Hikvision (2.8 and 4mm fixed lens versions) with the 5231 and it seems to me that the Hikvision with the 4mm lens is best for the front of my house. Good point and now that you point it out, I had read that in other threads on this forum so it does go back to me making a decision on storage mechanism as part of all of this. Cool thanks for the Hikvision recommendation. Before I go digging into the detail of it, I kinda got the impression the Dahua (5231 especially) was the king of all cams at the moment and I know it depends on the usage scenario but is it because the Hik might just perform better in my situation... -

This makes a lot of sense - I will definitely do that. I do have some known good patch cables so can do those best case tests at least. And no issues re-crimping either - I have plenty of kit and it'd be worth it if it works. I suppose I don't need to worry about cable 3 which only had 3.5%...- freddyq

Yea you're right about the PC for Blue Iris although as you guessed, I haven't actually bought one yet. Thought I'd get the cameras setup first and working and then decide what I do about NVR or Blue Iris. In terms of the cabling, I bought a reel of CAT6 cable at the time of the house...- freddyq

I definitely intend to use an NVR or Blue Iris to store the footage. I don't really think there is anyone I could get loan hardware from unfortunately but I'll look into it - so what I'm after is a managed switch? What's the worst case scenario here? Would these results prevent me using them...- freddyq

What do I need to do for a proper install?
Can any UK-based people here recommend trunking/conduit they've used to travel ethernet cable outdoors along the wall and a junction box to store cable/mount the camera? Where was this bought from? Ideally, the trunking would be paintable so I can try and blend it in to the walls...- freddyq

How to keep an 'always on' BI PC safe
I did have a PC in the past which was making an awful lot of noise all the time and it was the fan working overtime. I opened it up to find a 1 inch layer of dust covering the grill in front of the fan so removed it and all was back to normal! So it's a good point - I don't know if modern PCs...- freddyq
