Hello everyone, I most probably need your help ;-)

I buy all of my switches at this link - these are retired HP ProCurve switches that have worked wonderfully for me for years. I currently have 4 of these in operation and have not had one fail. They do a great job and are affordable. They do have 2 fans so have a slight noise, so not sure if...

What do you think about having cameras INSIDE your home?

You can also use blue iris' geofencing feature to toggle different profiles which can, in turn, 'enable/disable' recording of cams etc without having to go through the gymnastics of using smart plugs. But I understand your desire to be able to fully disable the device

What do you think about having cameras INSIDE your home?

I've got internal cameras facing entryways and one PIR cam monitoring my stairwell - I have audio recording disabled on all interior cameras at the BI level but recorded at the SD card incase I need it

New user here - need some help with scanning footage

Hi there - were there any 'telling' differences before/after the break in occured? Maybe a piece of trash fell out of the car, etc etc. I find usually it's better to spend some time analyzing clear differences between pre and post event and using those identifiers to help narrow down the timeframe

    Just another newbie

Understood - you are worried about the security risks associated with new technology. It's actually ironic because most of us here are in a similar boat - we don't trust our cameras, don't trust port forwarding, etc etc. We find safe harbor in the configuration and control that we have over our...

    Mystery of the missing package.

When I'm looking for an event that wasn't triggered I search by 50% (go 50% between the time you know the package was there and when you know it was gone), then if it's gone at 50% go 50% further. Example: 0 Mins (Package is present) 10 Mins (No Package) Check @ 5 Mins (Package is there)...

Welcome! Keep browsing around, we'll have you on a Blue Iris (BI) system with POE cameras in no time ;) It's cheaper than ya think :P

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

One other thing - I would suggest you start by getting everything running on the 'bench'. Get your PC, Blue Iris, etc all playing nice with the camera before you hang it up - then once you have the hang of configuring etc you can put the camera in its ultimate location

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Blue Iris does support 2 way talk, but it can be a bit tricky - if it were me I would start out with your proposed 4 basic cam setup and get everything running Then in some time if you'd like to dip your toe in 2 way talk you can easily swap the existing cams with ones that support it (or even...

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Yes most of us prefer pass throughs - it allows you to strip the wire to whatever length you find easiest to work with to straighten/organize the conductors. Then you slip the connector over the conductors (the small wires inside of the main CAT6 cable) and they pass through out of the front of...

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

A quick glance it all looks fine, you'll need a crimper (you can get a Klein brand they are good) Can you share a link to the ethernet plugs? That's the only part I'm not sure of, I don't personally know what "with inserts" means but somebody else could also probably opine

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

If you want to go with stranded I would likely try this: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13404 You won't really find a solid copper patch cable as they are all stranded so that's probably your best bet

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

It's really hard to tell from the pictures or even RCA's site what this wire is made of. Based on the pictures I am going to say that it is -at best- a stranded copper cable, but potentially (and, likely, at the price) copper clad aluminum (CCA)...

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Agreed, I actually recently renovated my second floor laundry room and was able to relocate my attic switch. I think a small closet is also a perfect spot You can see I have a sealed pvc box where I run my cables into a shelf in my laundry room

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Sounds good! I prefer to use the un-terminated wire while running so I can get through 1/4" holes instead of drilling 1/2" holes, and it's just a little easier to fish etc. But for your first cameras I think you'll be fine w/ pre-made and certainly will be one less thing for you to learn (for...

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

For runs from switch to camera I have been using this cable: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JAVNWOK For runs between switches & to PC I use cat6 (solid copper NOT CCA)

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

I would personally feel comfortable with my switch even in a higher humidity setting, though I would definitely clog up each port with some dielectric grease just to prevent any corrosion and would monitor the switch periodically

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

It's got 2 40mm fans - 3 of the 4 switches i received are totally silent, one of them has a bit of a noisy fan that I could replace if needed but it's in the basement and doesn't bother me. The loads going through the switches are so small that I could likely remove the fans without any issue

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Yes, I suppose the feasibility of a switch being in the attic will depend on your geographic location/climate. Humidity would be my main concern I think

New to IP cameras and need some help picking out components

Welcome aboard ! I've been using this switch for many years - they are cheap, reliable, and enterprise quality https://www.ebay.com/itm/314053763196 I currently have 3 in my house (one in the basement w/ my surveillance server, one on my first floor, and one in my attic) all daisy chained...

    Remote Access after power cut

Is your BI server set up as a static LAN IP? Perhaps when the power went out your internal IP's got reshuffled (if you haven't set up static) and you're actually forwarding the port to a different device? Just a thought

    AI Image Parse Masking

Yeah I have found this solution for sure and it does work - with the inconvenience of layering in settings etc of a 'second' camera :) Was mainly looking for some native support for this feature and seeing if there was other interest

    AI Image Parse Masking

Hi there - I've been searching for this feature for some time now and I know there's some other ways to accomplish, but essentially I'm looking to mask the images that are sent to CodeProject.AI or Deepstack to eliminate certain areas of the image that may contain unwanted subjects. For...

Alert only on first *AI-confirmed trigger* from group of cameras

Hmm - your camera behavior acts differently than mine - I have the following settings and the 'minimum/max time since trigger' only starts counting when a confirmed trigger event occurs - I'm looking in my BI at a non-alerting motion event at 5:08:16 and an alerting motion event (due to AI...

5442 impossible to correct color balance

It's a common commercial poe switch, you can look up the specs on HP's site. Haven't had one fail but have an extra unit that I can deploy elsewhere or use as backup. It's an affordable solution for providing power and switching.

5442 impossible to correct color balance

I've been using used HP ProCurve J9624A 2620-24 Ethernet Switch 12-Port PoE, 12-Port Non-PoE for 2 years now. I currently have one serving my first floor and a second serving my second floor. These unit are cheap and do the job well. So cheap that I keep spares on hand...

    BI and Camera SD cards

Awesome post! I've implemented all of what you've described - my cameras are split across multiple POE switches, each with its own UPS. I have a home-wide generator (natural gas) that functions as a 'secondary' power source. We could go down the rabbit hole w/ single wire as point of failure but...

    BI and Camera SD cards

I put SD cards in every single camera - if my NVR unit is compromised or goes down I at least have all powered cameras still recording & storing footage.
