    i use a raspberry pi serving a web page with some door contacts and a relay to control my garage door and provide status. also triggers BI when the doors opens (http commands to BI). could of done it with an arduino as well I suppose, but I have a the raspberry pi doing a bunch of other stuff...

    there about 18 months old. i have a few other drives kicking around and the reds are the quietest of the bunch (compared to a green and a plain seagate) checked all the mounts too, its the spinning noise from the drives themselves, not vibration. maybe im just too picky... :P

    ive never used these on small scale, but on an industrial scale, i've never had good luck with them. typically there only good for a narrow flow range and are very sensitive to the type of flow in the pipe (too turbulent and the accuracy goes out the window)

    could use an arudino/raspberrypi/etc independent of a camera. for those with serial comms, you could open the box and wire directly to the button inside of the controller, or use one of the remotes in a similar fashion.

    one of my cars has a mobius with the capacitor pack in it and modified cooling, my other two vehicles have marcus 3 from vicocation in them. the mobius has been a little finicky with voltages (make sure your using a decent 12v to 5v converter), but the vicocations have been good.

    Yes. I was getting roughly 10 months out of seagate 3tb consumer drives wtih 24/7 recording (gave up after 2 of them). Went with a better hard drive and I'm over a year now and still going! (WD Reds)

    I do, but I run mine in conduit. its not the poe that makes it the most reliable, but the fact that the data is on the cable, being able to use poe is just a bonus if your camera supports it. just watch the length and buy good quality cable. i believe there is cable rated for direct bury too...

    another options, if your ip on you mobile device is static or in a certain range, you could filter connections (in your router) so that only those certain ip ranges can connect to that specific port. also use a non standard port. not as secure as a vpn, but better than nothing (and easier)

    you could just load the blueiris local web server on the xp machine. not very efficient because your new i7 would have to do a bunch of re-encoding, but should work. unrelated, but you could dump xp as well and put linux on that machine so its current with security patches.
