    Hikvision's new 4MP 2-series

Night looks better, but I wasn't overly impressed with the difference during the day. I certainly appreciate the pics, but those pics indicate no need to upgrade from an existing 3MP setup unless you're building something new IMO, and even still I don't think the current price difference is...

Windows 10 - Words of wisdom with BI

I only got Windows 8 last year. Still hate it to be honest. Terrible user interface even with a third party product to bring back the start menu. I won't touch Windows 10 for at least 6 months unless it seems truly phenomenal. I'm sure IT will still be installing Windows 7 at work for a long...

    Hard drive for storage

My externals were either going to this project or to the landfill :) I've had a couple of HD failures in the past two decades that weren't my fault, but more than half were (i.e. hitting my computer while it's writing) :D If I recall correctly the average hard drive starts to have a fairly steep...

Swarm of bugs overnight attracted to IR

Mine looks similar to that when it's raining or snowing, just a bunch of nonsense in front of the camera :) I don't have alerts setup on any of my systems partly because most movement is benign and partly because false positives are just all but guaranteed in most systems.

Please recommend equipment to buy for a single home

Depending on how many cams you want and whatever else your budget is acceptable. In my case, for example, I already had a PC that I left on 24/7, so the only equipment I needed was cams at $100-130/piece (hikvision 3mps) + network cable, but you already ran that.

    Hard drive for storage

My vote, which may be worth what you paid--don't bother with the purple if you don't like its price or what you're reading. I have had a couple of cams running now for 10 months recording 24/7 video to some random external USB drives I found. I am sure many people are using whatever the heck...

    IP camera connection problems

How long have you had this? To many sellers' chagrin on Ebay, regardless of their return policy, Ebay often forces a seller to give refunds when the buyer isn't happy anyway. Courteously continue to ask for that refund and do not tolerate any delays (if you get any), and be sure to work within...

Powerline and POE injector built into one?

This comes up from time to time. To the best of my recollection last time it came up there was a product but it was over a hundred bucks, which really is too much for this.

Wedge mount for turret cam (2332)

If out of wood the proper tool i think would be a table saw because you can make an angle cut and nail down the exact angle. Using a hand tool is going to be hellaciously difficult unless there is a technique I've not come upon before (possible). And actually if you have a table saw, doing it...

Idea for very bright DIY IR illuminator....

Kind of a random post from me, but with a powerful IR setup is it not worth while being careful about your eyes when testing? I understand the eye fails to really react to IR, but it can still be damaging; somewhat like staring at a large light without the blink reflex. $27k sounds like quite a...

Wedge mount for turret cam (2332)

That makes sense now. So if minute is pointing at 19 and you mount to that, a normal install would have it pointing toward the 45 minute source or something, but for some reason you actually want it pointing back into itself, so with that idea you may indeed reach a limit on how much turn you...

Wedge mount for turret cam (2332)

Are you sure you need this? I don't think you do. That mount seems to me it's for a camera that lacks full axis movement and the 2332 does have it. You can mount the 2332 under an eave and rotate it in the plane of the eave, or point it up or down, or twist it; it handles all directions. Some...

Help me plan a security camera configuration for the outside of my house please.

Yeah it can be confusing. They are all more or less the same. I say more or less because there can be slight differences, such as whether the camera is USA region or China, which can affect availability of firmware. Also, I have three of the DS-2CD2332 cameras (I like them!) and one of them...

Help me plan a security camera configuration for the outside of my house please.

I suppose I'll be lazy and just say buy 3MP Hikvision cams for all. I like the hikvision turrets :) No reason to swap makes or models. You may want different lens sizes: 2.8 mm on the hikvision 3MP cover about 90 degrees horizontally, whereas the 4mm covers maybe 70. I have a 4mm on my driveway...

Help me plan a security camera configuration for the outside of my house please.

My take, you assume any strangers are coming from the south (if in this pic the top is north). In order of priority: Camera on NW corner facing SSW to cover the entire driveway Camera on SE corner facing SW to cover your door and walkway Camera where red line says backdoor, poining NW With...

Failed Motion Detection - Car broken into...

This is precisely why I record 24/7. I actually learned this when a neighbor put a sign on my car one night and didn't catch it. He did it for fun and it was a joke, but it was a good trial run. Recording on motion is nothing more than a convenience to make it easier to see what went on, but it...
