    I've just figured it out - it's going to some sort of internet signal booster mounted on the ceiling (maybe that's the WAP you are talking about) - it's a 3 floor building . You nailed it again !

    yeah I'll have to try and figure out where it's going. I'll check the in/out regarding the LAN as you suggest. Certainly a mystery to me.

    The grey cable goes into the switch from the injector, the blue disappears into the mass of cables that goes out somewhere and not into the switch

    Hi Wittaj, I posted a picture of my switch on page 3 and was told it was just a network switch and not POE but I've just noticed that injector - so it doesn't make any sense to me. There are no cameras plugged into it yet, just ethernet cables that run through the house

    nice username! Thanks for the links, I think Wittaj's wiki suggests 16gb ram so I'll probably look at a slight upgrade on the one you linked. I'm trying to find out as per advice above if this model has a spare Pcie slot for a NIC card. I'm assuming they are all able to take an internally...

    yep, the preference is not to have it there but it's looking like it's tough luck! I'm fine with it as long as the machine is quiet, I can just mount it to the wall behind the door. I'm just looking for the best option and it sounds like that's what it is. I've learnt it's better to ask...

    Can I ask a set up question please. So I have to get a POE switch and plug that into that network switch above, all the ethernet cables in that run to points in all the rooms in the house (and one to the router) - am I able to put my blue iris machine directly into an ethernet jack in any room ?

    it all terminates in the master bedroom closet on the third floor, that's where the switch and router are. Can you explain a little more because if I could put the gear elsewhere that would be a better option imho

    would this be good for running BI ? I'd choose the 500gb ssd although that is likely overkill as that would only house the OS, 16gb ram, windows 11 then add my own surveillance hard drive.
