    DIY Install - Feedback please.

Always nice to see when some one has taken the time and trouble to read existing posts in the forum, and done some thinking, before asking questions. My one suggestion is to start with a dream master plan, which perhaps goes beyond what you think you will do. Build infrastructure that has...

Connecting cables to outdoor devices without pigtails

@TonyR what is your view on currently-unused/future-use ports in switches outdoors but in a "weathertight" enclosure? Perhaps a dab of dielectric grease and put in an RJ-45 connector/clip, with or without wire?

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

@jnissen, thanks. Would have been nice to have a way to remotely "open-and-stay-open", and "close" the gate. But I do realize there are standards in the gate industry, and that rotary knob timer is the method to close the gate. Possibly a work-around may be to use the "scheduled-open/unlock"...

@jnissen, request your input on Access app to close the gate. I finally got the UniFi Gate Access hub connected via FO strands to the UDM Pro. The Gate Entry / Intercom is still not connected, just have to run an ethernet cable to the gooseneck and mount the Intercom. Please see attached PDF of...

Connecting cables to outdoor devices without pigtails

Prior to mounting my first cam, I came upon this post and follow the official @TonyR method of proper watertight connections between pigtails and ethernet cable. Offical TonyR method for watertight installation So far so good. Now I have a large outdoor weathertight enclosure that contains a...

    Building new home

I'd run two copper ethernet cables to every location - I like a spare. I prefer Cat 6 or better, because construction and installation is hard on materials, and the plastic spine in the cable provides additional strength and tolerance of cable handling. These days everything seems to run on...

Long outdoors network cable run – Part 2 ... Fiber Optic run working

@AP514 I had first pulled just a 1,250 lb pull tape through. Then I considered how to attach the FO cable at intervals to the pull tape as I was pulling more tape, for reasons you stated. Couldn't come up with a good solution and was concerned that in a 3/4" conduit a complicated process might...

Long outdoors network cable run – Part 2 ... Fiber Optic run working

Thank you, all. @Ri22o conduits have been in the ground since 2018, though there were modifications at the very end of the verticals. In any case the pull is done, and someday I'd like to try a comparison of pulls between 1@ 90* sweep elbow vs 2@45*.

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

You build stuff the way I would like to (over)build stuff, but I end up settling for mainstream stuff because my vision is more expansive than my ability to execute. That is quite an intercom mounting post, and gate (from another post), that you built. I hope it all works out for all concerned...

Long outdoors network cable run – Part 2 ... Fiber Optic run working

    E. Open Questions: 1. I would appreciate input on how to hang power supply bricks for two switches and networking device hub in the low voltage weathertight enclosure. See image above. The enclosure provides standard DIN rails but there is no way to mount DIN rail hangers on power bricks, that...

Long outdoors network cable run – Part 2 ... Fiber Optic run working

    D. Execution details – deep dive Existing conditions were that I have two ¾” conduits buried in the ground, around 330 feet long including verticals at each end, from the wall of the house to the far end. From the wall, approximately 70 feet through the crawl and up to the wiring center. Line...

Long outdoors network cable run – Part 2 ... Fiber Optic run working

    C. Fiber Optic Cable basics, relevant to IPcam network In 2025, Multimode OM3 FO is the relevant standard for residential FO wiring. OM1 and OM2 are older standards just like Cat 4 and Cat 5 copper ethernet wiring are older standards. For understanding the basics of FO cable, I found posts at...

Long outdoors network cable run – Part 2 ... Fiber Optic run working

    A. Overview of installing a long run of Fiber Optic cable I completed a long run of Fiber Optic (FO) Cable, with much help from forum members at every step. It was suggested that I document my experience, so this thread in case it is useful for others. Some time back I posted requesting input...

    Cam on gate post

That's a possibility. Time to get a black cam and start experimenting.

    Cam on gate post

I agree with your assessment. The way you have it is the best solution. Was worth thinking about tinkering with YOUR work, and as it turns out, you already have the best possible way. To my eye the PFB203 and other such mounts work in other situations, but not as well on a gate post cap.

    Cam on gate post

Please see the attachment in response to your comment. I have yet to upgrade to a newer version of 3D rendering software and used what I have. The more I think about it, I land at “never mind” but still wanted to depict what I was thinking about. There is simplicity/absence-of-complication in...

    Cam on gate post

Thanks - just went through the other thread and much to like there. Those "caps" would much help my cause, logistics TBD. I'd go with a 54IR-ZE in each post cap. It would be worth working with available orientations because this solution is elegant. Just a thought ... perhaps there could be a...

    Cam on gate post

Let's say overview, though anything could be fair game going forward. Right post cam could be oriented leftwards, say, and left post cam oriented rightwards. Black turrets with dome-up would blend in best, but it would be hard to get cams to point downwards. Overall FOV of 180 degrees would be...

    Cam on gate post

Request input on how I might mount cameras on gate posts in image, and what cameras - see image. PoE switch in enclosure at right in image. My thinking on cams at this location has been evolving. Now thinking the top of the 4"x4" black steel gate posts ( with slip-on plastic cap on top) may be...

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

@jnissen I am looking forward to your thread on the UniFi Gate controller. It is the final piece of my project that I have yet to get operational, pending pulling and terminating the FO. Am hoping to post a new thread on the end-state of my long network run when I get there, and in the meantime...

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

Glad to see this thread is helpful @Madflamethrower. This discussion thread, and the input and support from many, has helped de-mystify FO for me. I used to think it was high-end precision work only utility company guys do. I still wouldn’t attempt to join/splice FO strands. But terminating FO...

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

Thanks for your thoughtful response @Oscar C. At this point I am well down the FO road. All that remains is pulling the cable, and terminating fibers. By now I have the supplies, tools, gear, and know-how (not counting hurdles yet to be discovered) - just have to finish the project. I'll be...

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

Best as I can tell the Ubiquiti Gate Kit would be best for me given what I have in place already. At first I was perplexed as to whether the hub would go in my wiring room, or in the vicinity of the gate. After looking through available details, best as I can tell it should go near the gate. I...

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

Thanks. My network router is a UDM Pro and now that I know Ubiquiti has a Gate kit, am going to look at it. To the extent that UniFi creates a network for cameras as well as for gates, sounds like that would be the way to go. Your gate setup sounds very nice, and approriate for a ranch. My...

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

@jnissen thank you for asking, progress is slow, and this is where I am: 1. Recently I got the parts you had suggested as well as a Jonard JIC-375 stripper and Kevlar/Aramid snips. I have the Klein electrical stripper, but since I am not paying somebody else to do the FO, decided to spring for...

Cams and internet connectivity at driveway gate

@tangent thanks for suggesting the GDS 3710. I found a marketing and technical webinar on it from seven years ago. With this cam & gate control it looks like the "server" software is available via download. I am hoping that means this cam-control can be operated off the same internet-isolated PC...

    Long outdoors netwok cable run

Have come up with a possible solution for the FO bend radius problem, see photos of mock-up. Using parts laying around, I dry-fitted an assembly. I did have to buy the Y-adapter. I could even lose the Y-adapter, and bring just one conduit up before the box. This way much of the existing setup...
