If you have the storage space to use and CPU to spare then go for it. The only benefit would be if you are trying to review a fast moving recorded event. Is your phone actually connected to your vpn? Make sure to change your WAN setting to match your LAN... your BI app might be trying to connect to your public ip -

As long as your device is connected to your vpn, you do not need to do anything within BI. Like stated dont port forward if you have setup openvpn correctly. -

How many drives are you needing? The HP Compaq SFF computers that I use can hold (2) 3.5 inch drives. I believe @fenderman uses Dell Optiplex and I think someone said they can hold (3) 3.5 inch drives. I have had very good luck buying off-lease and refurbished HP compaq's on ebay. -
