    Just Sharing My Progress

I have a surfboard modem, which I believe is exclusively a bridge. I have an Asus RT-AC68U and have activated the VPN and generated the config file. I just can’t get it to connect. I’m pretty sure that I disabled all port forwarding so I think I need to figure out if I need to open one or ...

    Home setup?

I agree. Get one or two varifocal cameras and use bucket rigs to get the hang of things. You don’t even need a VMS for this part unless you have a specific threat that needs immediate attention. You’ll learn a lot in just one or two days of hands-on fiddling.

    Just Sharing My Progress

Just a quick update... It seems that it takes me about a week to figure out each step of this process. I'm inclined to at least attempt to figure things out on my own with the aid of the Wiki and the search function before I reach out with questions, so that's to be expected. I finally...

    Caught in the act!

I've had this cat for 13 years so I think I know him pretty well... he's an asshole. How do you fix that?

A quick Google search turned up Dia as a possible free alternative to Visio.

No, it’ll run you $60 for the “home” version and $100 for “pro”. I’m sure there’s a web based equivalent out there that will meet your needs, though.

I used a rattle can but I'll probably use a brush next time if I can find a suitable paint color. I initially wanted to completely remove all of the guts and cure the paint in the oven but that proved to be more work than I cared to attempt with a huge risk of failure.

Here are some closer pics of the installation. The paint job was quick and dirty out of necessity, so I'll need to touch it up at some point. I masked the face with blue painter's tape. I overlapped the sides and trimmed around the glass with a razor for a nice clean edge. I had a couple of...

Thanks! They’re mounted at about 7.5 ft off the ground. I’ll try to post some closer pics this morning. The garage does have attic space but I went the quick and dirty route because I needed them operational immediately. It looks pretty good, though, so I doubt I’ll ever go back and hide the...

    Caught in the act!

Also, I just threw it on a TV tray after ripping it out of the box yesterday. Haven't even figured out how to get the PTZ to work, yet. Overall it's not too bad for a $65 POE camera.

    Caught in the act!

Ha! My wife is so pissed at him. All this time we were thinking that he had some kind of health problem, but no... he's just pissed off because my daughter locked him in the basement. I love the guy but if he keeps this up this might be his last Christmas...

Here's a pic of the installation, so far. I'm waiting on a PFA130-E mount for the camera on the left. That's why it looks off center. The one on the right is completely installed and just needs a little tweaking to optimize pixel usage. Both cameras are painted an antique metallic color so...

Thanks! I'm kind of figuring this stuff out as I go, so I'm taking my time and doing it right the first time (hopefully). Plus, spreading it out over several phases allows me to budget for higher quality components, allows time for better and cheaper cameras to come to market as technology...

In Phase 2 I'll be installing an IPC-HDBW4231F-AS about 1' to the right of the front door and about 5' high. A 2.8mm lens should cover both packages and faces. I'm also thinking about putting a license plate reader somewhere out front at some point.

I just grabbed a couple Amcrest ProHD 1080P cameras for indoor use (IP2M-841EW). My cat’s been sh***ing in the corner by my pool table and I plan to catch him in the act and confront him with the video evidence next week. That’ll teach him... Anyway, I couldn’t find much info beyond Amazon...

One way removing junk from your home

I’ve heard stories of New Yorkers doing the same thing during the garbage strike back in the ‘80’s. I’m sure at least a few of them are true... I may leave some “bait” out next time I go on vacation... just for fun.

FYI, the Infiniti is parked about 4 feet shy of where it normally is. I'm also in the process of relocating the truck and parking all cars in the garage.

Here's the latest orientation. I decided that the center column between Bays 2 and 3 provided a better vantage for the driveway. I'll probably put a third camera in more of an "overwatch" role at the original spot facing our half cul de sac where all of the neighborhood kids play. I'll...

I’m gonna hold off on getting this fancy until the technology catches up to where a 1”x1”x1” micro camera can match the image quality of a 5231. I’ll be sure to work a few IR floods into Phase 2. It would be cool if I could get a dual element setup to switch from visible light to IR on a...

    Just Sharing My Progress

That’s exactly what I was thinking. My garage has a divider between the second and third bay that would be a good place to mount another camera. I was hoping not to need to do that because I don’t want my house to look like a prison. I’m probably going to paint them the same color as my light...

    South Carolina Homeowner Shoots Intruder

To further your point... last year when that Florida high school got shot up and everyone was crusading to stop gun violence because 17 people died... over 3000 people died in that same week in the US alone due to the common flu. I do a lot of travelling and I haven't seen even a single PSA on...

Did I just block my sunsetter solar shade with a gazebo?

With all of the sun being blocked by the gazebo, is it really necessary to have a shade over the sliding door anymore?
