I have used them for regular browsing for a long time in different locations and thought they were decent.. But for the quality of video stream i am expecting, i just dont think they are working out very well... Sigh.. $120 worth of them....

    Puzzled with cam

ok...still confused, but made progress... I ran a rather long piece of cat5 from my living room to my garage and patched it into the switch feeding 3 cameras... got the frame rate up on them and bit rate up on them to acceptable levels..so, at that point, I decided that the powerlline adapter...

    Checking In from Maryland

Hi mjb, I've been messin around with the powerline's too.... got about 10 of them, and went crazy hooking them to everything...seemed to give me some issues... One day, everything working good, next day, frame rates/bitrates are down..then back up again... I'm using the actiontek 500mbps...

Settings in DVR software and cameras

Ok, I can't be the only one. I've managed to fumble through getting several cameras set up in BI, and have managed to tweak a lot of settings to attempt to make the systems run smoother, but some stuff may as well be written in Chinese because I don't know what it means... I'll start with one...

    More Cameras? Specs/Settings help please

Alright, with all of the suggestions, and some tweaking, and a restart of the computer, my cpu usage is down to less than 50% with the current 4 cameras... This tells me that i'll be able to cram some more on the system... Thanks for all the input. Will be starting a new thread regarding...

    Puzzled with cam

ok, I've checked everything my limited knowledge will allow me to. I've set the cams up wireless, wired with powerline adapters, and tried every configuration of every setting I could find and no luck... My wife will be upset, but I'm going to make a long Ethernet cable and run it from my...

    Puzzled with cam

I'm very determined...will exhaust all options and as a (coming very soon) last resort, I'm going to run a hardwire from my router (buffalo running ddwrt) to my basement, up through the wall to the attic, out a side wall of the house, then over to the garage, to my 8 port switch....and if it...

Finally put a decent cam on my birdnest

hmm, didn't check that..and doubt i'll be able to tell over a teamviewer connection...will definitely add that to my troubleshooting arsenal when I get home...thanks for the idea..will let you know. Anyway, after deleting/reloading the cam, and disabling all other cameras, and running it on...

    Puzzled with cam

tried disabling all other cameras... and sometimes, very rarely, I get better slightly performance from the entire LAN, but I'm contributing that to the powerline adapters. So, to answer that question, no, doesn't make a difference if other cameras are disabled...sigh....

Finally put a decent cam on my birdnest

remoted into my home comp with teamviewer (slow and painful only have a 1/2meg down and .25meg up), and switched cam to wireless..same result...slooooowwwwww....

    Puzzled with cam

yes, latest and greatest..legit and all updated. The connection to my garage with the powerline adapters isn't as good as other connections around my house on other cameras, and I'd probably accept the loss of quality except for the fact that I can get a perfect resolution, streaming 20+...

Finally put a decent cam on my birdnest

no, I did away with the wireless.. but yes, it is a wifi capable camera, but not using the wireless. Tempted to try the wireless and see if I get a better connection.

Finally put a decent cam on my birdnest

well, I'm on my third cam..1st was a 640x480 with the most junk lens ever... 2nd one was a nightmare to even get working, and when I put it up by the birdnest, things just didn't work out and the image/video was not worth sharing... But, this is a 1080P camera that probably isn't meant to view...

    Puzzled with cam

have a cam, actually 4 of the same model... 3 of them are on one of my systems at my house. 1 of them gets good frame rate all of the time, the other two (on a different powerline adapter in my garage) get between .1 and .5 fps... the one that is connected good gets over 300 kB/s bitrate in the...

    More Cameras? Specs/Settings help please

regarding milestone, I downloaded the "free" version to give it a try... anything I need to know?.... BI just about pushed me to my limits with bitrate and frame rate on my home computer...not sure what the deal is, but I can get an excellent framerate in the browser, realtime, streaming...but...

    Camera Lens Reference Diagram

think that was based off a 2mp camera at 1080p resolution..but yes, a 640x480 cheapy camera wouldn't provide the needed detail to view a plate.

    More Cameras? Specs/Settings help please

well, I dropped the bit rate down on the 3 decent cameras from 150 to 600 kB/s to 100-150 kB/s and that seemed to help a bit... the 4th camera, an old junk one doesn't have the settings for me to adjust the bitrate and is stuck at about 600 kB/s ... Also, I have them all dialed back to 10 fps...

    More Cameras? Specs/Settings help please

WOW, I changed all 4 cameras to Direct to Disk record and yes, it did reduce the cpu usage by about 10-20% but now when I view the recorded video, there is ghost images and garbled video images of whatever is moving...so..that won't work...was worth a try though..changing settings back now...

    Camera Lens Reference Diagram

Thanks for the correction on the 720p..I think I wrote that because I had it fresh in my mind from seeing a falsely advertised camera on ebay...Anyway, yes, the statement still proves true, 1280x720 can still be disappointing when formatted on a low quality camera with a less than adequate lens...

trying to repost this screen shot in an attempt to make it so it can be clicked on and viewed a bit better..not sure if it's working..but here it is again... If you double click on it, then click on it again, you should be able to get a larger view to be able to see the details....

    More Cameras? Specs/Settings help please

I have 4 cameras running on this computer...one junk camera, 2 slightly better than junk cameras, and 1 nice camera... I've dropped the frame rate down on the best of the 3 cameras, to 10 frames/sec in an attempt to lighten the load on my CPU. I have a pretty decent processor, AMD Phenom II...

Passive POE trick to save a buck

Ohh, and obviously, from a professional point of view, a POE switch is the easiest, safest way to go.. Even an inexpensive POE injector works good... I suppose my thread is geared toward taking a camera that is Not POE and using POE to reduce the need for extension cords... So, you can take a...

Passive POE trick to save a buck
