Buying a used Dahua NVR - yes or no?

Having a 4ks2, I'm aware of one difference, but it's even more complicated. There's a version 1 4ks2, and a version 2 4ks2. I've got version 1, and some of the newer firmware works only on the version 2. What I don't know is if there's different firmware for the version 2 4ks2, and the 4ks2E...

How is a VPN more secure than port forwarding?

I learned this the hard way in a previous century when the backup media was the shiny brown stuff on reels. I had been blissfully backing up on tapes for at least a few months before I discovered that they were all blank, even though the software and tape deck looked and sounded like they were...

How is a VPN more secure than port forwarding?

Then it uses P2P, which is as unsafe as servers that manage the connections. I'd guess that it has more risk than the "traditional" VPN, but the risk for both has a lot of zeros to the right of the decimal point.

How is a VPN more secure than port forwarding?

All of the security decisions are based on risk vs. hassle. For myself over the years, the anti-virus software has caused a lot more hassle than any virus has caused. The one virus I know I picked up blew right through the anti-virus software, and I quit using it about 10 years ago. My...

    Money & Economics

I think you'll win that bet. I follow 6-month t-bills and they're down about a quarter point since a week ago. That's a huge movement in that short a time period. A similar move happened a couple of months ago and the yield mostly recovered fairly fast. I'm not predicting a darned thing...

    Camera Triggered by Floating Artifacts

It's the same principle that when my wife is driving she gets mostly green lights. When I drive they turn red in my face so I have to slam on the brakes. I'm convinced the cameras at the intersections have facial recognition to do this.

Dahua NVR -- where to set pre-recording seconds for IVS rule

I can't because I'm not a DMSS user. If you have the camera SD card recording only events, I remember that it will start the playback before the trigger time. I've never tried 24x7 recording on the camera to know how that works.

I get the spider web white dot triggers often with IVS. Even with the S3 having the human, vehicle, and animal filters on.

Dahua NVR -- where to set pre-recording seconds for IVS rule

I'm thinking we're talking past each other a bit, so saying differently what I thought I tried to say :) : First I'm talking only about IVS events, and I've set BI's record/pre-trigger-playback-time to 5 seconds. When I click the event in smartPSS, playback starts at the trigger time. When I...

Dahua NVR -- where to set pre-recording seconds for IVS rule

Too many details I can't comprehend this early in the morning! From a strictly user standpoint: With the NVR, when I click on an event, the playback starts at the event time. With BI, the playback starts a few seconds before the event time, and it sure looks like it's the mainstream being...

Dahua NVR -- where to set pre-recording seconds for IVS rule

I'm not able to answer because I record full time. I'm such a BI non-expert that I don't even know if BI lets you not record full time. With the NVR I'm a bit mixed up. I thought if you're not recording full time, the pre-record buffer DOES work. Dahua made an early decision to use the Linux...

Dahua NVR -- where to set pre-recording seconds for IVS rule

A not very helpful response I realize, this is one thing that works correctly in BI. I'm not trying to sell BI because there are some things that work better with the NVR. When you pick one, you're blessed with it's particular good features, and stuck with its particular shortcomings.

    Pandemic threat? Anyone else concerned?

Today's version is 5 nurses, no cancer. I'm more and more convinced that 90+% of what we read in the "news" media and social media is plain old excrement. 5 nurses who work on the same floor at Massachusetts hospital have brain tumors

Anyone created a custom model to identify coyotes?

I have foxes and coyotes coming through on a fairly regular basis. At least half of the time, neither my wife or I can decide which one we're looking at. I'd be really, really impressed if a machine could differentiate between fox, coyote, wolf, and some dog breeds with good accuracy.

    Funny / Satire

Between when my cancer was discovered and the gene test results came back it was assumed I'd be going on chemo and I came within a week of having the port installed. It frankly scared me, mainly because of the part where a tube is inserted into the jugular. I was extremely relieved to find out...

    Pandemic threat? Anyone else concerned?

This claim has been going around on social media for a few days. I'm not meaning to make light of it, but it looks like it could be another one of those phony and/or exaggerated stories. Remember how the phony story about hospitals overloaded with ivermectin overdoses came and went? Another...

    US Elections (& Politics) :)

I think dual citizens should not be allowed in federal elected positions. They by definition have a split loyalty, and if they want to be a leader of the USA, they should give up the other citizenships. If they're not willing to, they are copromised, not fully loyal to the country they claim...

Using ethernet splitter for two cameras

Interesting! I have assumed that each output could drive 15 watts. In common carelessness, another picture on the same page says 10w + 8w. I thought Andy's spec for what I assume is the identical device would add clarity, but it doesn't.

He may be right that America is headed toward a dictatorship, but is he too dumb to realize Canada is further along? Oh, Yale University professor. That explains it. I imagine he took the job for more money and/or he's more comfortable with Canada's already established dictatorship, and saw...

    Need help starting AI

In UI3, the clip thumbnail will say "RuleEngine/LineCrossing" if a camera tripwire caused the event. You're hitting on one of the big disadvantages of using BI over an NVR, in that the NVR real-time display and playback shows the trip lines, and indicates when they're triggered. Many years...
