I'm trying to prep a property so that the new resident can install cameras without any networking knowledge or tools. I've run Cat5e to 4 different outdoor camera sites, and I want to terminate them with RJ45 plugs and the corresponding cable glands, so they can just buy a camera and plug it in.

But I also want to protect that RJ45 plug from the elements until the installation happens which might be next month or next year or ????

After sitting on my brains for awhile, the solution was simple! I have a bunch of dead cameras lying around, and I can clip off the RJ45 jack:

It's a perfect mate for the RJ45 plug and gland, and it's waterproof.

But at some point I'm going to run out of dead cameras.

Is there a good, cheap source for these jacks? I see camera pigtails on aliexpress for $2 - $5 apiece plus shipping, but I don't need the whole pigtail. I need just the RJ45 piece. Amazon doesn't show anything.

I would recommend finding a generic junction box .. that is what I would do.

Drive by any camera company around and ask. I throw a few dozen of these out a week. Most of the cams discussed here have a compatible standard. Just terminate, bag and tape off.

I just wrap male RJ45 in tape if they aren’t in use.

Similarly, I stick the end in a small, clear plastic snack bag then run 2 -3 turns of electrical tape around the CAT cable tightly.
I squirt the end with dielectric as well before sticking into a snack bag. Probably overkill, but oh well LOL.

I've done that when it was an indefinite time before I install or the client will install much later. If I'm doing it in a few days I wait to squirt some in the female on the cam and work it in and out (calm down if you read this, @Arjun...these are camera connectors I'm talking about here). :lmao:

Lots of good ideas, here. Thanks! I was definitely overthinking it!

But I did leave 4 fancy cables for my tenant today:

(Yes, I tightened the back end of the gland after I took the photo)
