Yep...literally wore out my "Disraeli Gears" 8 track tape...

It came with a 3.00:1 rear end, I had ordered a 3.50 so it went back to the dealership....they put in a 3.91!
Can you imagine a 428 CJ engine with a C-6 trans on a 3:91? It would get sideways when it'd shift by itself to 2nd gear and then bark the tires when it hit 3rd. Forget about putting your foot in it from a standing start...all it would do was boil the tires.

It had so much torque that, unlike the Boss 302, you couldn't tell the difference off the line and up to 100 if you were by yourself or had 5 other beer-drinkin' buddies in the car. The top end was about 110.

Not sure of the top end of the Boss...The speedo stopped at 120 and I had it pegged in 3rd gear at 6,000 RPM on I-285 below Marietta, GA. I think it's safe to say it would go 140. I disconnected the 6,150 RPM limiter and replaced the stock vacuum advance distributor with an Accel centrifugal, dual point distributor and solid core plug wires, had a guy that raced Z-28's on dirt track set it up on a Sun machine, as a Z-28's valve lift & timing/cam grind VERY close to that of a Boss 302.
Yea, that was too low of a rear diff ratio for that car! lol! The 3:55 would have been a better gear for the street. But I'm sure you had a blast driving it with your buds, I miss those old C6 trannies. I use to overhaul a lot of them back in the day. Now we are dealing with 10 speed automatics.

I can't help it..I'm a binge YT addict. I won't watch a YT video for days or weeks and then someone sends me one, I watch it then another video in the right column catches my eye and I'm hooked, off and watchin' maybe 5 or 6 more.

Since there were a few mentions of cars in this thread here's a video I found that amazes me what people will do regarding their cars, their maintenance (or lack of) or how stupid they can be. I'll bet those of you that actually worked on cars for a living in a dealership or auto repair shop have seen similar things. Enjoy!

Gotta love using vegetable oil in the crankcase. Doesn't look like it held up so well! I've watched some of those "Just rolled in" videos, along with the Ford tech that makes a lot of YouTube videos. Both are entertaining and informing. I wish I had the time to produce stuff like that, but I have over a dozen transmission overhauls waiting to be done at work. No time for video production!

Yeah it was screwed up. As I recall (it's been 52 years) the stamped metal tag bolted to the big chunk style differential said "3.00L" which if it was in fact Locking was asking for cone clutch troubles on a Traction-Lok. Prior to that, my understanding nothing lower than 3.50 (3.55 was for smaller Fords at that time) could be locking.
And the morons at the dealership didn't order the matching speedo gear so my speedo was way off. I drove it for a year like that, sold it to get the Boss 302.
