Is there a good small camera for front and rear doors?

Hi everyone, I am just learning about these cams and I'd like to replace my Ring Doorbell with this cam. My question is, I only have about 7.5 feet height at my front door, so where would I place this cam?20170730_095443.jpg 20170730_095455.jpg
Seems like it'll be too low and someone could tamper with it.

I labeled the likely suspects:
1 - centered over the door (alernatively it could go right above on the ceiling. I don't have any room over my door, but if I were to install today I'd likely install over my door on the ceiling)
2 - face height to the side of the door
3 - where my camera is placed (I have a similiar entry way.)

And I wouldn't put too much thought into the tampering or theft of the camera - placement is more important and it can always be replaced.

Thanks! I never considered directly over the door. Appreciate the help!

If I could do it again, I'd choose to have my camera at face level beside the door. Given I've got a front step, an individual wearing a hat would need to look up at the camera for me to see their face.

The Ring Doorbell is wifi correct? If it is working why not keep it and install one of these Dahua mini-dome wedge cameras also?

Note on the Dahua mini-dome wedges - properly installed they are very solid cameras - metal case - strong plastic dome. Solid enough for me to install at eye level. I also used some solid long screws to secure into one of the studs on the wall - so it will not be easy to pry off.

Great point! Guess I'll be testing each location prior to securing. Thanks

Yes, my Ring Doorbell is wifi and it does work, but since I've found this forum Im learning that all my equipment is not that good. I did like the Ring, but I'm learning that there are better options.

This definitely works better at a front door..

My only issue is that in the web UI, and on gDMSS it doesn't look very good at all.

Is your camera the 2.8mm or 3.6mm?
Your angle has good coverage from doorstep out but I do not want do view all the way out to my yard, so thinking if this is 2.8mm then i'll try a 3.6mm to get just the doorstep to the walk in my situation and maybe it would provide even better image identification.

...maybe even the 6mm.

lets see some caps please! with as wide as these bitches are I think lot of ppl gonna need corridor mode

Those MiniWedges IMHO are the best indoor camera you can get, excellent image in all lighting conditions, discrete, great audio pickup, wall to wall coverage.. They would work okay outside but be prepared to deal with all the shit domes throw at you.. reflections, uv degradation, bugs.. it is a compromise outside, and front door at head height is really only place I could justify it.

I have a local friend I'm trying to convince to actually mount to his front door, he's in a townhome (HOA) and they wont let him mount any cameras to the facade but we think we have a loophole because he owns the physical door

Did your friend ever get his cam installed?

They are releasing a new battery/wifi doorbell camera. I was like, wow good specs.
Then i saw the picture, that thing is huge ! Mayby i was imagining doorbell cameras where pretty small. Have not actually looked at the specs of the older ones.

this doorbell is useless, it cannot provide a steady stream because its battery powered...it wont stream to nvr/vms....anyone who thinks the batter will last anywhere near 5 months is crazy.

Aha I see, yeah then its pretty much useless for our applications.

I'm trying to figure out what I can use for my front door and am looking at using the wedge listed in this thread.

But.... I have this one problem....
IMG_9033[1].JPG

A bright as F@$#CK sun that is DIRECTLY in front of my door.... it seriously burns holes in your eyes when you step outside in the late afternoon hours.

This wedge is a dome... so I'm thinking for a few hours a day it'll be useless... and the UV will kill it anyway.

I have an overhang..... so some kind of turret could go up there and be out of the sun... but then it'll be a bad angle for ID'ing anything.

Any recommendations what I can do here?

Hi Revlus,

1) I would try this, and I know in general not a good idea to put an indoor camera behind glass, however in this case the glass is cut into smaller pieces so you can more easily isolate inside light from getting in and in this case I think it's worth trying as the view is straight on - at test worth testing out.
You have a lot of glass on that door, you could try a indoor Hikvision CUBE or similar camera pushed right up to the small clear glass section by the doorbell, turn of the IR on it, and see what sort of results you get?
( you can use black felt around the lens to seal the inside light from getting into the glass/lens.

2) The other option seems to me to accept the possible UV exposure issues and sun reflection issues and plan to replace or look at UV protection options on the mini-dome.

3) Maybe have to change to the 42xx turret model? Larger and not as pretty, but solid performer

Mount the cam just above the front door on the brick, not ideal, but will keep most of it out of the sun. Then point the cam at the steps, to catch a face as the come up on the porch.
