Planning out system.
Is it possible to add a user or 2 and give View access to only 1or 2 of the cameras in the system? Looking at needing an 8ch nvr, starting with 4 cameras.

If so:
  • Is there a particular model to purchase or do all of them allow the View only function?
  • Would they be able to view recorded history of the allowed camera?

Yes
I have set up user accounts for folks that only allow them to view live and playback but have no operational controls at all on a couple of different Dahua NVR models, both 4000 series and 5000

How to add a new user to your NVR:

Go to accounts management:

Add new user:

Setting to only view certain cameras:
Here is an example of a user (cannot change settings) and is only allowed to view camera 1, 3 & 4 during playback.

In the 'monitor' tab they can only view 1, 3, 4 & 5.
'Monitor' is the live view. Maybe your user is only allowed to view cameras live in a store to monitor guests but not allowed to playback video.

Here is that setup account in action:

They can only see their own account and cannot change their permissions:
But they can change their password.

In live view;
They can see all cameras on your system and the camera names.
However, they can only view cameras you allowed them to. There was also options to allow the user to control a PTZ or not.

In playback, they can only see the camera you allowed them to playback:

In AI search, they can only see the camera you allowed them to playback:

If you allowed the user to "Manual control" they have the option to activate an alarm relay on the NVR.

The user is also only allowed to log out. They cannot shutdown the NVR.

A mention too for multiple employee accounts:
You can make these accounts into a group and easily change everyone's functionality rights at once.

By default there is 'user group' and 'admin group', but you can add another group.
This 'user group' is also were you can change the default permissions for 'user' group.

You set the group someone is part of on the user setup page.

Example of a new group:

Thats exactly what I did years ago for our HOA. Only 41 homeowners so I added a group HOAusers. Gave them live view only. A few others on the Board I gave Playback capability.
I want to say you can have 128 connected in theory, but I rarely saw more than 2-3 use it.

I actually shut that down last year as I was using port forwarding to enable it.o_O

I guess I need to look into how they can use the app and P2P as using a VPN isnt in the cards for that many homeowners. Funny all but one never noticed
