This is my first post here. I have searched, but I think I need specific advice. I have an existing camera setup of exclusively HDview brand NVR, 2 dome cameras and 2 bullet cameras from Amazon. One bullet set up on a Rekor server for LPR via RTSP, the other is zoomed in to catch vehicle occupants. The 2 domes are overview to catch good view of passing vehicles and vehicle occupants, which only works in daylight, and only if the sun is just right to not glare a reflection into the cameras. Subject vehicles are traveling about 40mph, angles are reaaonable. I have had about 50% success at catching plates and occupants. I need to increase my abilities.

I have a very particular need for LPR and overview for vehicle occupants. I am completely unsatisfied with the quality of the cameras from HDview and would like a substantial upgrade.

I was initially looking at Dahua, but am leaning more toward Hikvision. I don't know enough the compatablity issues of different branded cameras and NVRs. I am hoping someone can recommend me an NVR, bullet cameras with motorized zoom (my current HDview cameras are manual zoom and focus, and they are a major pain), and dome cameras with high enough resolution to catch good stills of vehicle occupants in a vehicle moving 40mph about 40 feet away if the lighting is right.

I want to stick with higher end features such as AI with facial recognition, vehicle recognition, etc. I am okay with continuing the monthly fees of $50 to rekor to keep ability to collect vehicle make and model, but if the NVR can do it itself, that's even better.

I also need this set up ASAP. Waiting a week or two is okay, but I cant wait more than that. So shipping time is important, i can't order from china and wait 30 days. Cost is important, but I have a budget that can go up to $2k if necessary.

Can anyone who knows what they are doing point me in the direction of a i who will help put together a kit or a few model numbers i can look up to replave my setup? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Welcome!!

Are you looking for an NVR or Blue Iris?

@EMPIRETECANDY often ships from Hong Kong, but delivery to the US runs like a week, or often less. But if you can get it from his Amazon store, that normally should be a little quicker.

The camera @Old Timer linked above does not do vehicle recognition. I am not aware of any reasonably priced cameras that do that or ALPR. The camera is just tweaked to do very well on LPR from settings you will find in this sub-forum. The reason the camera works is that it is zoomed in to see basically the car, and not much more. This setup works to 150 feet or a little more, with 95%+ reliability.

For seeing occupants, the go to camera around here is the Dahua 5442 series, although Hikvision probably has something similar. You need to read up on DORI and zoom. I'm sure one of the other guys will wander in here with their very complete welcome and detailed information on all of that.

If you are in a real rush, and your distance to the cars is less than 175 feet, I would go ahead and order the camera linked above. It should work with however your are running OpenALPR now.

NVR5216-4ks2 none Poe , use a external Poe switch can make LPR setting easier.
40ft just use IPC-B5442E-Z4E

Can add some turret motorized lens IPC-T5442T-ZE

Thank you for all the responses. It's nice to finally have information from actual users instead of the salespeople and websites I've been getting my info from.

Today, I will look over the links you all provided. I'll come back later after I get a chance to review. I read something a few days ago that made me sway stronger toward Hikvision, but now I can't remember what it was. Information overload has gotten me.

Here is an other thread that you might find interesting. One of my cams is used to get vehicle info and sometimes occupants. It is a Dahua B5442E-Z4E and is called my Intersection Camera in the thread.

I've gone down the rabbit hole. I'm looking at Blue Iris now instead of a NVR. Before I get too deep into brand specific cameras, I wanted to ask this. Are there better cameras than the ones mentioned so far for LPR or general overview, if I lean away from Dahua? I'm talking better as in capability, not bang per buck or comparability. I don't mind spending more to get something better, nor do I mind saving money to get something equivalent for less money that's a different brand.

Both Dahua and Hikvision make similar cameras in the lines of cameras. There are "better" cameras with more capabilities, AI, but in terms of video quality they are not much different at all. I'd suggest you contact Andy from EmpireTech and ask him. He has access to both Dahua and Hikvision.

Can't go wrong with Blue Iris!

Most here use Dahua for LPR. The "better" cameras are going to be the ones that actually read the plates and log them, etc., but since you use OpenALPR (and tests have shown that is better for US plates than the capability in the cameras), no sense spending more than you have to.

However, keep in mind that most of us have found in home settings that facial recognition is more gimmicky and novelty than anything else. If you have to put in 5 or 10 or 15 pictures of yourself in the NVR or DeepStack for it to recognize it is you...then you shouldn't expect much....

It can work in certain situations like a business that requires everyone to stop in front of the camera and the camera is at head height. Outside of that, the percentage of being accurate is probably not going to be super high.

Unless you spend the big bucks that casinos and airports have LOL.

But if everyone that is coming in parks their car in the driveway, the plate reading can be really accurate. My system will send me a text if any plate that I marked as suspicious comes past. Of course that means the plate had to have come past before and I have a reason to be suspicious of it.

Heck even in ideal situations like a business with the camera at ideal height and optimal lighting it fails....

I am a tech geek, but I also have a particular need, so I will know the particular plates I am looking to capture. I also have the particular faces, but if the tech isn't reliable, I think capturing the footage will be sufficient for my needs. So I will not count on face recognition, I don't have a Vegas casino budget or IT dept on hand to run security. I have already emailed Andy. Will see what he says. I am definitely leaning toward BI over the NVR. I already have the hardware running a local server and the features sound to be superior on BI anyway.

Thanks for all the tips here, folks. I wish I started out here 3 weeks ago before I bought lousy hardware on Amazon.

Here is the AMZN storefront for EmpireTech-Andy, where with Prime shipping, cameras can be delivered by Wednesday:

Another avenue is to email Andy and he sends you a PayPal invoice, and drop-ships from Hong Kong via DHL within a week, at least it was so before the pandemic.

Lets see:
  • Tech geek.
  • "Learning towards BI"
  • "Particular needs"
  • "No Vegas casino budget"
  • "No IT department to run security"
Definitely BI. This place will get you far down the road to particular needs solutions at reasonable prices (well, reasonable to some, absurd to others who like Reolink and similar).

And if you want fancy, consider the 25x zoom PTZ auto-tracking camera. Yes, it follows people, cars.

I emailed Andy and he was on it like stripes on a zebra. We discussed all my parameters and I settled on 2x Z12E and 2x T5442T-ZE

They will arrive via Amazon by tomorrow and Tuesday. Like i said before,I wish I came here first.

He also recommended IPC-LPR237B-IR in case I need to add another, longer range LPR camera, along with a NVR. For now, it seems I will run Blue Iris on a local machine along with openALPR and see how that works for awhile

You guys have been awesome. I'll let you know how it goes when I get the bullets tomorrow.

Please share with us some captures from the HDView!!!

Keep in mind though that capture occupants in a car is difficult. Need a lot of things to play in your favor.

A straight on shot of the vehicle is darn near a must.

The right light is the other factor. Nighttime is a lot harder.

Some here have had success with placing a filter over the lens for a higher capture rate going through tinted windows (polarizing filter maybe?). I haven't got to that point yet as I do not have a good angle to try to capture that clean shot.

You probably know this, but if not, at night, we have to run a very fast shutter speed (1/2,000) and in B/W with IR and the image will be black. All you will see are head/tail lights and the plate. Some people can get away with color if they have enough street lights, but most of us cannot. Here is a representative sample of plates I get at night of vehicles traveling about 45MPH at 175 feet from my Z12E:
