This car is moving about 5mph and ~12 ft away from the camera, the plate has no dirt on it. why is the image complete noisy trash? it's like the IR isn't on or something

You really can't compare the two images. Different angles, distances, travel direction, etc.

If you do not think the IR is on, go outside and look. What firmware version are you running?

You might try this

yes, and very clean. when it goes by the other camera it's crystal clear. scratching my head.. it's 12 feet away shouldn't it be super bright?

did you post the image from the other camera?

3 possibilities
1. plate is not retro reflective
2. IR is not ON at full power
3. IR Cut filter is ON

I had problems with that firmware. Mostly cams going offline for about 2 minutes every 90 and not keeping the manual focus. Also had grainy captures and sometimes they looked out of focus but the focus value had not changed. So I went with the latest official version, V2.800.0000000.22.R, Build Date: 2020-11-19. My new settings below that seem to have solved all of those problems.

You have a great install spot right on the road with virtually no angle. That is great!

I'm also having a bit of a hard time dialing mine in a night. I'm going to give @samplenhold's settings a try and see how that goes tonight.

I run with the sharpness down quite a bit and that knocked that grainy look out for me.

Ok I dropped the gain down to 15, opened the iris all the way up, and upgraded to V2.800.0000000.22.R firmware

i guess i was hoping for a better image given it's got 4 huge LEDs on it, compared to the original hikvision with 1.

here's the hikvision camera, same position:

I'd knock gain down - try knocking down by 5 and keep adjusting until you get the image you are looking for. Mine is horrible without HLC at 50 and I am not as straight on as yours.

I've found once at the point where you are with overexposure but good otherwise, it was a fine balance between Gain and Iris.. 5 unit increments until good
