I'm looking to turn an old PC into a Blue Iris machine. But since it'll be on 24/7, I was thinking maybe I could also have it run a VPN. I only now have learned the VPN server function in Windows is PPTP, which iPhone doesn't use anymore.
Is there a free/simple way I can host a different type of VPN on my Win10 machine that I can access via iPhone? I appreciate any info, thanks!

There are a lot of threads on here about VPN solutions so by doing s but of search you will definitely find solutions.

One thing that I run myself (paralell with my L2TP) and that I experience being more easy to setup is Zerotier. I will not explain what it is as there are plenty of info on their site and Youtube.

I've been searching for Windows VPN a lot now, haven't found anything useful here. In fact, this post is the only result that shows both of those words.
I just watched a couple videos and read several sites and reddit posts about ZeroTier, it definitely looks like an internet based only access, I would like to stick with direct access.

Maybe I should clarify my first post, I want a VPN app that specifically runs on my Windows computer, and doesn't connect through third party networks, that I can use to connect to my network directly via iPhone. Maybe I'm misunderstanding, and perhaps such a thing doesn't actually exist outside the inbuilt PPTP?

easier solution for me was to get an ASUS router with Vpn options built in. Now I have it running on my iPhone( I think it's running) I put a couple certificates on my phone, for Open vpn and or Lpt whatever the fuck.... IPsec....

I use Hyper-V within Windows to host Raspbian (debian linux) and use PiVPN (OpenVPN) from there. Takes 1% cpu cycle and 1GB of ram. I also use Raspbian to run Pi-Hole

Are there no VPN host apps that run directly on Windows 10, or is there some sort of limitation I'm not understanding?

The word you're looking for is server. There is a OpenVPN server for Windows and here is a how to.

Much easier to use PiVPN for me since I already use Raspbian.

I was hoping to just use the same OS I already had. I suppose I'm asking too much. Perhaps I should just try my hand at making a Linux OpenVPN again. Thanks anyway.

My general VPN post
There are two types of VPN, do not get them confused.
The type depends on where the traffic conversation originates

1) origination: local home network, destination the internet.
This type of VPN is purpose to hides your activity from the internet, it is outbound, it normally costs a monthly fee to use. Direction is from your home PC to the internet, going to your bank, google, porn sites,,,, this not what you want. This VPN uses a VPN server that is in the middle of your communications.

2) Origination: the internet world wide web, destination: your home network.
This VPN type is used to provide a secure connection onto your local network, in bound to you local home network, from your office computer, your cell phone in your car, tablet at the coffee shop.. This is what you want, it does not have a monthly fee and is normally completely free. OpenVPN is this type of VPN.

If you home internet provider is a cellular network, then DDNS (dynamic Domain Name System) may not work, the DDNS is needed for most Inbound VPN services (OpenVpn) to get your home IP address (it is not static) so OpenVPN may not work for you.
Look at ngok or Hamachi for remote access to a home cellular network (I have NOT used these)

Openvpn server can be installed on windows; os does not need to be server version of windows

There are plenty of how-to articles for download, installation, and configuration that can be found using your favorite browser.

As mentioned above, first check to see if your router can be used as the openvpn server. It's a much easier solution.
