best bet is to ask for quotes from professional installers in your local area. I mean, if you want to hire my company here in Reno NV, prepare for exuberant trip charges :)
Yeah, I'd be mighty Exuberant too with the trip charges. :p

What do you usually charge per install drop?

$95/hr + material. usually $70 per data drop. however, house or warehouse environments are usually double that due to the extra manpower needed. safe to say, we RARELY do houses for this reason. I'm too old to climb in 150 degree attics :) or crawl on my hands & knees in wet dirt spider infested crawlspaces.

If you don’t mind me asking how do you explain to clients that cctv instal isn’t cheap when done correctly (i.e. multiple professional cameras vs a few big box wide angle lenses)

my main business is running Cat6 and fiber optic cable drops for customer PC's or AP's. Cameras come in when we do something like a warehouse where we have our 40' scissor lift there and already running Cat6/Fiber for various reasons.
For business purposes, our fees are super reasonable. Reno NV is booming for housing and warehouse work so it's that supply/demand. Tack on living in the shadow of Cali real estate (my house was $100k back in 2012....now it is over $450k), the price of living has increased.
Anyone who says we are too spendy can happily hire un-licensed under the table folks (which sometimes they do).

Cool that makes sense! What’s some of your favorite cameras for warehouse installs?

I went on a service call for IT stuff to a mom and pop store last year, I noticed they had a Dahua security kit installed, They have been IT customers for 10 years of mine, I looked the job over, seemed pretty neat, I had to ask, They were getting around $500 a drop with a 8 port POe NVR and four cheaper 2.4 mm cams, That kit on amazon was around $650. I turned on IVS for them and they were grateful because the Installers either had no clue or did not want to go there with the system.

Yea it seems like a lot of companies are overcharging for CCTV when most people on this forum know more than 90% of local installers.

here is the thing. I, personally, rely on Dahua and Blue Iris at home. However at work, I am only a tech, not bossman. The customer usually decides what system to put in and we install the cabling and cameras. I have no say in the matter. If I was bossman, I would be pushing Dahua & Blue Iris for that's what I'm comfortable with. I know folks with whine about the price tag but I'll show them vid/pix of lower tier cameras vs upper tier which should sway them. Businesses have equity in the place of business...thousands and thousands if not millions of dollars. Trust a business to $25 camera or quality Dahua camera, same for the NVR. * granted, never dabbled with a Dahua NVR so unsure how well/not well it would compare to Blue Iris *

She said they spent 2 days there, the outside run needed a guy wire to a utility pole, the cam was like 15' in the air, Not the greatest height to ID a face so I know these guys do NOT read this form :smash:

Yea very infrequently businesses instal Blue Iris for clients. Maybe not in my area Atleast. But I think a quality CCTV installation company that spends the time to educate customers on quality cameras will be the #1 in the business. Unfortunately for my 1st property I got ripped off by an alarm installer who installed only 4 wide angle cameras 25 feet in the air (before I knew about this forum of course)

To be fair... my work place was a Toshiba business telephone system dealer and infrastructure cabling place since 1999. 2 pair, Cat3, Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6a, Cat6e, various fibers (multimode and single mode....mechanical splice and fusion splice). 98% geared towards cabling in walls, ceilings, warehouses red irons (think Home Depot), underground 3" conduits, etc. For business network purposes involved customer PC, remote switches, paging, digital phones, faxes, network printers, network mailing machines, smart tv's, etc. This is our main gig.
We are not camera dealers. Sure we install the cabling for them since we are already installing data cabling for other purposes.
I personally would love to bring in being a camera dealer ontop of business phone systems and infrastructure cabling. Since I have learned some of the do's/dont's, science, engineering involved with IP cameras, I would feel comfy being 100% responsible for them at work. But again, not my call :)
So I can not speak of CCTV installers as we have a more diverse business application than just CCTV.

The few installers I've had exposure to were/are just that... installers. They run the wires, connect the ends, power it up, aim the cam and they're gone. Most are stuck with the goods, 'as-is'; no idea that the system could be tuned or dialed-in better, etc.
Rightfully so, it takes time to dial and tune the cams, and when the customer does not want to spend a lot of money on the hardware, they will be just as reluctant to want to cough up the cash for making it the best it can be.

edit: ironically, the sales guy will spend two hours on site to visually survey the property, answer questions, and make suggestions. :idk:

Consider trying ==>> Better Business Bureau
Category: video surveillance system

At the above link I suggest typing in the category "video surveillance" and "BBB Accredited Only"; put in the name of your city and state then click on "Search."
