When I moved to Colorado Springs in 1974, I was told not to waste my time applying for a job with the telephone companies unless I was a black female with a hispanic surname. If I'd have only known then I could had "identified" i might not have moved back to Arkansas in '76.

Similar situation for me and similar timing. 1977 moved with family to Dallas from Pittsburgh. As one of the first and youngest at 18 to be certified as an EMT in PA as a volunteer, (PA was overwhelmingly volunteer in those days) I wanted to become a paid firefighter/EMT.
Went down to apply for civil service test and was told I was number 3000 something. (Basically you’ll never be called) because at the time they were only looking for “minorities”
