I have a camera (actually several) watching the building across the street. There are currently three apartments being used to sell drugs. There are hundreds of buyers every day, they have been dealing for years out of there. The police never do anything.

Today there was some action...

As part of my surveillance system, I also have ALPR cameras. The system can identify 'plate switchers'. It basically looks for the same plate on different vehicles.

It is normal (and legal) when you buy a new vehicle to move your plate to your new vehicle.

Turns out my system had identified this plate that the guy had on the VW today is used often on other vehicles as well. Just in the last few days, it was detected on three different vehicles.

Sent this to the local PD? Got to be suspicious.

The cops were on the lookout for him. I'm guessing the cop in the Fusion was the watcher since he was sitting in the parking lot and the 2 marked units come from the blind side. Stolen cars, chop shop? I'll bet that plate doesn't belong to the driver either.

I'm ok
I recon the plate is stolen, and car is also. they will run with a stolen plate until it gets turned in, then
steal another one. by switching plates on cars, they have one more thing to keep the cops guessing.

I'd like to eventually get one of those cams people are using for LPR. We had a couple people park in our Lot Sunday night.
They walked to the Canadian Pacific Train bridge and graffiti painted for 25 minutes. "Minx" in varying fonts and colors. and a F.The Police job, which I'm sure they took exception to.
Then he sprayed two of our signs on the way back to his car. Sheriff was interested in a shot with a plate #. No deal.
I have the Car on 3 cameras, and the perps on 2 cams. He thought it was amazing that they were in Color at night.
Got a good description of the car type and color, and was able to determine it was guy and a girl who seemed pretty young.
( Who else would run enthusiastically 100 yards to a bridge giggling in 25 degree weather. )

What are you using to detect plate switching? I'm running OpenALPR but it doesn't do that
I developed that software myself. I am using OpenALPR but then do my own manipulation and a few bells & whistles after I get the data from OpenALPR.

Just a few things like correcting license plates, if OpenALPR says the plate is AAO 12A I know that can't be right as we have no O on our plates.

I also have the system correcting the make/model of vehicles. OpenALPR assigns the make/model each time it sees a plate. I use make/model information over multiple sightings of the plate to come up with a higher degree of accuracy of the make/model.

No, I am just running the $5 a month version. I get the plate and vehicle direction from OpenALPR, everything else I think I am doing myself.

Another thing I do that OpenALPR does not do well. Do not try and identify the make/model of vehicles after sunset. Clearly, they are never correct. My system checks what time sunrise & sunset are and will flag an image as taken during the night and not try to guess the make/model.

The police are well aware of my cameras & setup, they send me photos of vehicles from other camera systems around the city. For example, some red Ford pickup has been seen breaking into businesses. They have no plate info, but they have photos of the truck

They will send me the photo and ask if I can provide the plate number.

As a result of those requests, I came up with a 'mugshot mode' to view plates. For the above example, I would say show me all Ford pickups, red in color. The mugshot mode shows me all matches. When the vehicle is not a match, I just click a 'nope' button and that vehicle is removed from the list.

It is amazing how quickly you can narrow down the list and find the vehicle they are looking for.

Does open ALPR and your addon or software can be used in windows and behind a NVR? In behind a lorex nvr but using most Dahua cameras.
Thanks and real nice system.
